Bill: RP: UBWP Leadership Election, April-June 4777

Details

Submitted by[?]: Unsubmissive Beluzian Workers Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: December 4778

Description[?]:

The UBWP held a two month leadership election after incumbent General Secretary Blair Vilma Sousa decided to resign from her position as General Secretary after 322 years to devote more time to her presidential duties. 5,200,500 members were registered to vote and polls were closed today after a month of voting, with a turnout of 98%. Fifteen candidates ran in the election, and they included newer and younger faces of the UBWP, many coming from the youth wing, alongside candidates from the Sousa era, or the 'establishment'. The candidates are:

Dr Ximun Pwyll Gebara, 367, Iliathar UBWP Party Chief, Member of Parliament
Dr Ortzi Zorion Ola, 367, Iliathar UBWP Deputy Party Chief, Member of Parliament
Professor Iokaste Aurora Madigan, 347, Minister for Trade and Industry
Millaray Beitris McDonald, 350, Minister for Foreign Affairs
Dr Julius Furgenster IX, 354, Prime Minister
Dr Janus Hartmann VI, 352, Former Leader of the Democratic Socialist Faction of the UBWP, Member of Parliament
Velvela Uduakobong Kseniya Lorie Franklin, 18, Leader of the Young Unsubmissives, Member of Parliament
Sibonakaliso Clara Josefina Liorit Kató, 17, Member of Parliament
Nayeli Carina Kristina Hannele Smalls, 25, Leader of the Left Wing Populist Unsubmissives, Member of Parliament
Maura Skyla Ursula Barbara Van Can, 20, Leader of the Democratic Socialist Unsubmissives, Member of Parliament
Katharina Dalit Chevonne Xeni Sokol, 19, Leader of the Socialist Feminist Unsubmissives, Member of Parliament
Ashanti Marikit Boyka Vaihere Hennessy, 17, Leader of the Ecosocialist Unsubmissives, Member of Parliament
Martina Fadumo Carme Roxana Fournier, 24, Fort Thorne City Councillor
Julius Hisham Martîn Jerry Ericson, 22, Member of Parliament
Markku Sakari Rajesh Glyndwr Paxton, 23, Member of Parliament

Competition was close, with candidates offering bold, optimistic visions. However, there was a lot of tension between the candidates. Tensions flared between the Prime Minister and his ministers, with Furgenster saying that his ministers offered bullet point plans, whereas McDonald accused Furgenster for 'coming from an outdated political dynasty that should have left politics centuries ago', with Madigan calling Furgenster 'a candidate banking on name recognition when most of the generation who voted for him have died, and the current generation barely knowing who he is'. Hartmann also received similar criticism from the young candidates, many of them asking why Hartmann was still in politics even though he had barely won reselection last election (he won by a 0.15% margin) and had promised he would retire from politics if he was not popular within the party. The older candidates questioned the age and experience of the young candidates, saying that their brand of politics was 'revolutionary', 'impossible', 'ridiculous', 'impractical', 'illogical'. The young candidates, in defence, pointed to their age gaps, many of them making the similar point that they represented 'the 45th century rather than the 48th century'. The younger candidates also called for changes to rules on who could run in leadership elections, saying that the party should represent the modern mindset rather than the 'medieval, archaic, stagnant' mindset of 2-3 centuries ago. Many also called for term limits, saying that these were long overdue and that a leader being in power for hundreds of years was not only ridiculous, but undemocratic. This they attributed to centralisation of decision making in one person's hand for centuries, allowing that person to effectively 'rule the party with an iron fist'. There was also criticism of Sousa's leadership from both the young and old candidates, asking why a leader who was the youngest party leader and promised to expand the role of the youth in the party held on for 3 centuries, never considering replacing her frontbench with fresh faces or at least a balance between old and new. From all of this, it seems as if UBWP members are tired of the more pragmatic, moderate Sousa era and wish for a return to the more idealistic, ideological, radical UBWP prior to the Sousa era. Who will UBWP members choose as their next leader to bring them success? Will they choose the newer, more radical faces of the party, or maintain the status quo of the Sousa era? Results will be brought to you as they are announced tonight.

Ashanti Marikit Boyka Vaihere Hennessy has been elected as the next General Secretary of the UBWP.

In a shocking and historic political development, UBWP members today overwhelmingly voted against the Sousa establishment, electing 17 year old Ashanti Marikit Boyka Vaihere Hennessy as their next General Secretary. And in a shocking reversal of fortune, Sibonakaliso Clara Josefina Liorit Kató, who was considered the frontrunner due to her charisma and her distinct platform of 'uplifting, evolutionary democratic socialism' was edged out by not only one, but two of her rivals, Hennessy and Franklin. The anti establishment camp (the young faces) constituted 78.66% of the total vote, whereas the Sousa establishment constituted only 21.34% of the total vote. With Ms Hennessy being elected as General Secretary, she will be the youngest serving General Secretary, at 17, toppling Ms Sousa from her mantle as the 'Youngest General Secretary', who was 22 when she took office. With Ms Hennessy having low name recognition amongst the voting public, the recent election handing UBWP another term in office, and her relatively young age (which has raised questions on whether she is qualified to lead the party), Ms Hennessy will face an uphill battle. She will have to build a formidable national profile, to introduce an entirely new frontbench, and to persuade voters that her 'Radical, Reformative, Revolutionary Democratic Socialism', different from Ms Sousa's 322 years of pragmatic, tempered democratic socialism is why the UBWP deserves another term in office. What form her different form of democratic socialism will take will be known when she makes appointments to the UBWP State Council (the UBWP frontbench). Will she guide the UBWP down their old radical path, or will she guide the UBWP to a more aggressive, but still moderate left-wing path? We will bring you live updates as Ms Hennessy announces her appointments in the hours to come.
