Constitution of the Clergy An act to forever restore the primacy and power of the People of Selucia over Selucian territory and end the disloyal status of some who, using religion as a pretext, refuse to obey the laws and principles of the Republic. With the approval of this act the clergy of all religions of Selucia shall be considered civil servants of the Republic, serving the Res Publica first, and their religious organizations second. The following articles are implemented: I. All clergy and ministers of all religious organizations with more than 100 active members are to be democratically elected in the territory which they serve, be it municipality, province, or the entire territory of the Republic. Only registered members of the religion residing within the territory may participate in the election. II. Before taking office all clergy and ministers of religion are to swear a solemn oath, in the presence of the people and the magistrates of the territory they serve, to obey the laws of the Republic, to be loyal to the Senate and People of Selucia, and to guard and protect their faithful to the best of their ability. III. All current ministers of religion must take the oath outlined in article II if they are to continue to exercise their duties. If they fail to do so their seats are considered vacant, and new elections shall take place as outlined in article I. IV. All religious property shall be considered ager publicus (public land) and shall be administered by the elected ministers of religion in the interest of their faithful and the common good. The Republic pledges to support, restore, and expand all religious buildings whenever necessary, and to construct new religious buildings if required. V. As loyal citizens of the Republic subject to her laws, ministers of religion shall be considered civil servants. As such they are shall be provided with a suitable dwelling and shall receive a monthly salary from the coffers of the Republic. VI. Ministers of religion shall perform all their sacred duties for free, and may not receive any form of compensation. The salary shall not be considered compensation for the services they perform. |
