Message | This will encourage innovation in the private sector, but since the government is the consumer, an adequate subsidy should be provided. |
Date | 19:39:38, April 24, 2006 CET | From | Free Conservative Party | To | Debating the Defense Industry Act 2218 |
Message | Does the subsidy need to be provided? Defense is a profitable business; I do not think it needs subsidization. On the other hand, if we subsidie one company, it makes it hard for others companies to arise make profit. How would we chose who to give money to? This is just unfair to some companies. |

Message | This is, however, better than the current. |

Message | The DLP disagrees. The defence industry is essential to the Free Republic and its regulation is essential to ensure arms are not sold to undesirable countries or organisations. The DLP supports the current policy. |

Message | Ahhh, but DLP, you are mistaken. We already regulate who weapons are sent to. That was a different issue. |
Date | 23:13:16, April 24, 2006 CET | From | Jelbék Zemojad Lofrkad Prta | To | Debating the Defense Industry Act 2218 |
Message | It is true though that if the government owns arms companies, then these companies can be set to produce weapons and vehicles necessary for our armies much more efficiently than private enterprise. Private arms companies already exist, and we do not object to them, but we believe for the defence of the nation it is necessary for the government to own some companies. |

Message | Really? Frankly I find it hard to believe that a government company with no competition will be more productive. And I have Proof: The Soviet Union, which no longer exists. I have my evidence, you need to get some before make arguments like that. |

Message | I believe that is like one of those "unfounded accusations" that DLP constently accuses me of. |

Message | OOC: The Soviet Union never existed on Terra. Dude this is a game. BTW, the Soviet Union, in 1989, had the largest and most productive industrial economy on the Earth. However, the emphasis in the world was then on computers and new technology not iron, steel, coal and the like. A planned economy works more efficiently than a free market, but adapts much more slowly. This is known economic truth. If you wish to research it, go to the library. |

Message | "A planned economy works more efficiently than a free market, but adapts much more slowly." Well, in a constantly changing environment, that is not very good, is it? Even military weapons nowadays are changing greatly. |

Message | I did do research and you were right, they did produce the most steel and iron because of all the ironore there. However, "Comparative studies suggested that productivity was only 25 to 40 percent of that in U.S. industry, in part because much machinery was obsolete." They could refine ore-anyone could do that- but could not produce machinery to compete with modern machinery. By the way, the fact that Russia has the most iron and mineral deposits helps the fact that they produced the most. |
