--OVERVIEW--

Aldegar is a diverse country with a rich cultural background unique among the countries of the world. Ezadi (Iranian) and particularly Aldegarian (Persian) people have historically dominated the region. The history of Aldegar has been shaped by the various other peoples in the region though, especially the Mu-Tze (Mongol) people who are focused in the country's northern regions along the Tukarese border.

Previously thought to have been among the original inhabitants of Seleya, the Ezadi (Iranian peoples) are now believed to have arrived in the region thousands of years ago from the continent of Majatra. Since then they have ruled over various empires throughout the continent until the emergence of the contemporary state of Aldegar in the second millennium. Between approximately 263 and 719, the country was under the rule of the expansive Mu-Tze Khanate and became an important part of the continental empire. For the past two thousand years or so, Aldegar has been governed alternately as a republic and a shahdom: a form of monarchy native to the region which is ruled by a Shah (male) or Shahbanu (female).

For as long as the Aldegarian (Persian) people have lived in the region, they have practiced Yazdism (Zoroastrianism). Historically regarded as the country's national religion, it has been crucial to the development of the modern nation and continues to be the single largest religion group in Aldegar today. Nonetheless there are other significant religious groups in the country including Daenism (Buddhism), which also developed in the region, and Hosianism (Christianity), which spread from Badara.

--ETHNICITY--

Ezadi (Iranian) peoples constitute the majority of the population of Aldegar. The largest single ethnic group are the Aldegarian (Persian) people but there are other Ezadi (Iranian) groups such as the Bihezi (Kurdish) and Dudmani (Pashtun) people too. The largest ethnic minority community in Aldegar is the Mu-Tze (Mongol) people who are concentrated in the countries northern regions.

--RELIGION--

Yazdism (Zoroastrianism) is the dominant religion in Aldegar. Founded by the Aldegarian prophet Shapur in 710 BCE, it centres on the belief in an "eternal fire" present in all things. Yazdism teaches that morality involves a duty to fight against darkness through "good thoughts, good words and good deeds". Two major denominations exist within Yazdism: Ahadism (Mazdaism) and Zamānism (Zurvanism/Manichaeism/ Yazdânism). Ahadism is a monotheistic denomination and the most popular within Aldegar. According to adherents, Yazdān as the creator of the universe while there is also belief in an evil spirit known as Duzakh. Zamānism, meanwhile, is characterised by a distinct dualism between good and evil spirits as well as an emphasise on asceticism and non-violence.

Despite being only a minority faith in Aldegar today, Daenism (Buddhism) was born in the region in the 1st century as a sect within Zamānism (Zurvanism/Manichaeism/ Yazdânism). Since then it has grown and spread throughout the globe to become one of the major world religions with a particular importance in the countries of eastern Dovani. Rowshanism (Babism/Mazdakism/ Khurramism) is a new religion founded in 3736, based on the belief that Mihryazd, a 38th century Aldegarian, is the Mihr (Saoshyant+Maitreya), fulfilling eschatological expectations of other Aldegarian religions. Rowshanism follows a hedonistic and altruistic ethic, with an emphasis on radical egalitarianism.

Finally it is worth noting that many people in Aldegar have religious beliefs which exhibit varying degrees religious syncretism. Although they may identify culturally with a particular religion or denomination, the diverse yet similar religious traditions that exist within the country have led to significant interfaith influence over the past five millennia. Furthermore due to persecution in the past, some groups (primarily Hosians) have been forced to practice their faith secretly and in doing so have adapted their iconography and religious symbols to avoid attracting attention to their faith. In combination these factors have created a unique religious background to the country.

» Yazdism (Zoroastrianism)- 71%
⠀⠀-- Ahadism (Mazdaism)- 53%
⠀⠀-- Zamānism (Zurvanism / Manichaeism / Yazdânism)- 18%
» Daenism (Buddhism)- 13%
» Hosianism (Christianity)- 8%
⠀⠀-- Aldegarian Apostolic Church (Nestorian Church / Church of the East)- 8%
» Rowshanism (Babism / Mazdakism / Khurramism)- 4%
» None- 2%
» Hamekhodaism (Pantheism)- 1%
» Other- 1%

--LANGUAGE--

Aldegar's national language and the most commonly spoken language in the country is known as Aldegarian (Persian). In academic terms there are several different dialects spoken (Tajik and Dari) but the standardised form of the language (Farsi) has become dominant in recent centuries. Aldegarian has traditionally been written using the Aldegarian (Avestan) alphabet due to its significance in Yazdism however there have been numerous attempts to utilise new or foreign scripts for Aldegarian orthography including those based on Majatran (Arabic) and Delic (Cyrillic) scripts. Aside from Aldegarian there are several notable minority languages such as Bihezi (Kurdish), Dudmani (Pashto), Kharaji (Balochi) and Panmuan (Mongolian).
