Message | We propose that nuclear power plants are banned from our country. They are dangerous and there are much safer ways to generate energy for our citizens. |
Date | 20:57:22, May 04, 2006 CET | From | Fenner Brockway Socialist Party | To | Debating the Nuclear Power Act |
Message | Most of the time they're very safe, but what is true is that in the unlikely event that an accident does occur or a mistake is made (or in the event of a terrorist attack on the facility), the effect could be catastrophic. Further, there is no satisfactory system of storing nuclear waste over a long period. Disposing of the waste safely can be expensive and it needs to be kept in containment (usually underground) for hundreds of years. We support this bill. |

Message | If nuclear is unacceptable what is acceptable? Fossil Fuels? A million hampsters in their little wheels? How about all that stored energy in socks that come right out of the dryer??? All energy has a downside--nuclear's downsisde in the course of human history is no worse. To take an effecient, cheap, environmentally friendly energy off the table is just plain short-sighted. |
