Updated Cultural Protocols

This forms part of a discussion to update the Cultural Protocols for Baltusia. This consists of a refresh and tidy up of the last Cultural Protocols which can be fund here - http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=581032

--Nation description--

Baltusia is a mix of cultures and ethnicities, and is considered the “melting pot” of Terra. From the Egelian influenced culture and architecture in the south, to the old Luthorian styles in the north, a remnant of the post-colonial nature still adherent even thousands of years later.

OOC: The United States of Baltusia is modelled on the United States of America and this is reflected in its ethnic, religious and linguistic make up, in which a Luthorian-Baltusian (RLE: American) culture dominates, but has been subject to many influences from other cultures.

--Ethnicity--

The Baltusian population has been heavily altered through historic colonization from Luthori and Seleucia. Slavery introduced an Esinsundu (RLE: Black) population and later waves of immigration introduced other diverse populations to Baltusia. The original Mashacara population still exists. The northern states of Attano, Westbrook and Ralston have higher “Artanian”-Baltusian (RLE: European-American), while the southern States of New Egelion and Santiago have much greater diversity.

--Language--

Around 95% of the population can speak Luthorian, if not higher, however there are many languages spoken in Baltusia.

Official: Luthorian (RLE: English)
Recognized in some States: Egelian (RLE: Spanish), Dundorfian (RLE: German), Maschacaran (RLE: Native American), Valruzian (RLE: Polish), Canrillaise (RLE: French)

1% Istalian (RLE: Italian)
1% Mashacaran (RLE: Native American)

The United States of Baltusia is well known for its historic secularist separate of Church and State, although most Baltusians will claim to belong to a religion, specifically Hosianism. --Regional Descriptions--

Attano – During the age of colonisation Attano was initially settled by Canrillaise (RLE: French) and still has a Canirallise speaking minority (15%) population, which is an official language along with Luthorian. Despite this history, Attano is the least diverse State with 80% of the population being of Artanian (RLE: European) background and 75% of the population are Hosian, although mostly Luthoran, with just 20% of the Hosian population being Aurorian (RLE: Catholic). The Canriallise culture shows in the state’s architecture, especially in the capital, New Valois. The state is home to many rolling hills, and boasts the north Seleyan mountain range, attracting tourists far and wide. Towns are small and are home to small department stores, as opposed the the capital, which is home to numerous service providers. Attano’s real life equivalents are derived from the old French colony of Louisiana, and parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Westbrook - Home to most of Baltusia’s native Mashacara population (12% of Westbrooks population), along with a significant Dundorfian (20%) (RLE: German) and Valruzian (12%) (RLE: Polish) minorities, tourists to the region will quickly note the Luthorian/Mashacaran/Dundorfian and Valruzians names on signs. About 75% of the population are of Artanian (RLE: European) ancestry and religiously the population is mostly Luthoran (RLE: Protestant) with only 20% of the Hosian population being Aurorian (RLE: Catholic). Flanked by the north Seleyan range in the East, a popular saying amongst fellow Baltusians is that people from Westbrook are the happiest in the world, due to them being cut off from society. Aside from this trope, services thrive in the region, mainly in the form of logging and some limited agriculture. Westbrook’s real life equivalents mainly come from the northeast, in the Appalachian mountain states, like West Virginia, and some slight influences from New England.

Ralston – Ralston has the highest number of citizens claiming Luthorian-Baltusian (RLE: British) ancestry at about 50%, with 70% of the population claiming Artanian (RLE: European) ancestry. The state also has the highest proportion of Luthoran (RLE: Protestant) and Bishopal (RLE: Anglican) Hosians with only 15% of Hosians belonging to the Aurorian Church (RLE: Catholic). Ralston makes use of its mostly flat land by way of farming, often giving it the nickname “the Breadbasket of Seleya”. In the northeast portion of the state, closely bordering Kalistan, many industrial operations are conducted, along with oil refining. The real life equivalent of Ralston is the upper mid- west, with areas such as Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota.

New Egelion - New Egelion is a mixed bag of ethnicities reflecting its history with Egelion colonization and slavery. With an Artanian (RLE: European) population of about 50%, New Egelion not as diverse as Santiago but it is more diverse than the northern states. About 30% of the population speak Egelion (RLE: Spanish), with 25% of the population are either of Egelion (RLE: Spanish) or Pensio (RLE: Hispanic) ethnicity. 20% of the population are Esinsundu (RLE: African-American). New Egelion, along with Santago is bilingual with both Luthorian and Egelion recognised as official languages on signs. New Egelion and Santaigo are also the two States where Aurorian Hosians (RLE: Catholic) make up about half of the Hosian population. Many domestic service providers make their homes here, from local grocery stores to industrial corporations, along with some information providers. New Egelion’s real life equivalents are somewhat derived from the desert states of Arizona and New Mexico, except New Egelion is lush, rather than barren.

Santiago – Santiago is Baltusia’s only coastal State and as such has welcomed various waves of immigrants. With a history of Egelion settlement, slavery and more recent immigration it is no surprise that Santiago is the most diverse state, with the smallest Artanian (RLE: European) population of any Baltusian State (around 40%). About 40% of the population speak Egelion as their first language, with 25% of the population claiming either Egelion (RLE: Spanish) or Pensio (RLE: Hispanic) ancestry. Another 25% of the population are Esinsundu (RLE: African-American), the highest proportion of any State and 15% are of Gao-Showa background, also the highest of any State. Santiago, along with New Egelion is bilingual with both Luthorian and Egelion recognised as official languages on signs. Santiago and New Egelion are also the two States where Aurorian Hosians (RLE: Catholic) make up about half of the Hosian population. Santiago is known for its white sandy beaches in the small strip of land that opens Baltusia into the Antanonese ocean. It is often a popular vacation destination also for Baltusians, marvelling at the old Egelian architecture, as well as relaxing in the southernmost regions, which boast a tropical climate. Santiago’s real life equivalent is essentially Florida.

MessageSUP, I have gone through the current Cultural Protocols and proposed adding greater detail and bringing in more influence from neighbouring nations. I have added greater diversity and simplified some of what was included in the current version of the CP. I have looked adding a Pensio (RLE: Hispanic) population, particularly in Santiago and New Egelion reflecting the proximity to Tukarali and Gaduridos. The Gao-Showa population has been diversified and I have added a Valruzian population, which makes sense given our eastern neighbour.

I think this brings us more into line with the rest of northern Seleya, although Lodamun remains an anomaly. If you agree/support this I'll reach out to the Moderators and ask how we amend the CP to make it official.

MessageOOC: Hope you don't mind some outside input if that's alright. "Egelion and the southern Seleyan Canriallise states" - keep in mind that in Particracy the Romance languages were spread by essentially the Roman Empire if it had been a 19th century European colonial empire.

MessageOOC: The increased “pensio” population in Santiago looks cool, though perhaps slightly lower the amount of hosians to 67-68% as I think the number of non-religious citizens would be slightly higher, other than that it looks great

MessageSUP - Thanks for the feedback, I've lowered the Hosian figures a tad.

LWP - Thank you for that insight! That is a really useful backstory. I had seen Baltusia as being a bit more like Texas and cutting across a Luthori/Egelion fault line, but that all makes more sense knowing the Seleucians were the former colonial power and Egelion is a creole/settler langauge. However I think this game naught makes the Canrilliase population in Attano very out of place. So I am thinking that perhaps the Seleucians settled some of their colonists from elsewhere in northern Baltusia prior to the North Seleyan Wars to try and stem Luthori settlers filtering across the border. Then after the war Luthori settlers would've quickly become more dominant in the north of the country.
