Bill: Educational System Devolution Act 2224

Details

Submitted by[?]: Growth and Prosperity Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 2225

Description[?]:

Both higher education and pre-school education policies allow either self-regulation or is decided on the local level. However, the education system itself is currently subject to "heavy regulations" that are set on the national level. Since the alternatives do not include devolution to the local level, it is proposed that the "heavy" regulations are lifted so that private schools can exist alongside the public education system. This would also bring in regulations regarding private schools in line with regulations of religious schools AND charter schools where regulation and development is either left up to the local government or self-regulated.

MessageWe will always support free public education, but we also support this effort to deregulate private schools. Private schools should have the freedom to educate as they please.

MessageThis is not devolution, this is de-regulation of private education. If the Citizen's Party recalls, they supported the DLP's regulation of private schools which ensures they are up to standard and providing necessary skills and education.

Why the sudden change of belief. CP?

Message"...regulation of private schools which ensures they are up to standard and providing necessary skills and education." They do NOT need regulation! If they do not provide adaquit learning, people will not go there!

And even if it does not provide a good education, who's problem is that?

MessageWhat do you mean, who's problem is that? Ours.

When we have a signifigant number of children leaving school without the necessary skills for work or university, when we have less graduates and thus less high tech industry and foreign investment, then the economy will suffer. When the economy suffers, everyone suffers.

Message"When we have a signifigant number of children leaving school without the necessary skills for work or university"

Yes this is true, and it's much likelier to happen in a public school than in a private / charter / religious one. The current laws on the books already allow charter schools and religious schools to operate through self-regulation, while hamstringing our private schools with self-described "heavy" regulations that reduces their numbers and their effectiveness. Competition in the education system is a good thing people! There are many very well-run public schools but plenty of poor ones. By having private schools, it provides an alternative.

MessageWe believe that the kind of "competition" GPP is alluding to in the education system is not a beneficial thing. We believe that traditional subjects and well-rounded educations will be neglected in favour of education that "sells". When schools primary ambitions are profiteering then we believe that we have a big problem.

MessageThe type of "competition" is purely the idea that a school can not take its students for granted. All parents have a strong incentive to send their children to the best school possible. Jelbanian parents already have the option of using the public school system, religious school system or charter school system but have very little choice for private schools. That means that parents who do not live near a charter school (traditionally most often found in larger cities)and do not wish to send their children to a religious school have NO choice except to send their children to the public system. This simply increases the alternatives available, and allows each school to be able to reach their full potential.

MessageWe view this policy debate as a debate on how much freedom we allow to exist in our society. As the DLP has pointed out, our party has supported the current policy in the past. We are a center-left party, and we do support some degree of regulation and social spending to offset our free market. However, in this case, when the government provides free public schools (which we generously fund), we feel there is no need to restrict religious, private, charter, and other educational establishments from pursuing alternative curriculums and educational practices.

Changing this law would strike a good balance between social justice and personal liberty.
