Description[?]:

OVERVIEW

The island nation of Vorona has remained a turbulent powder keg of different ethnicities. By the 5th century, 5 different groups took control of different areas of the island. These were the Tabang (Tagalog), Malivian (Malay), Nelayan (Javanese), Jebish (Hmong), and Namdo (Jeju Islander) peoples. After centuries of fighting and territorial dispute, two kingdoms emerged – that of the western, Namdo-dominated Geumseom, and the eastern, Tabang-dominated Wawa. Their borders split the nation in the middle on the banks of the central Kumelun river.

Throughout it's history the island has been dominated by foreign colonial powers, which have each had their own unique influence on the island. Among these colonial overlords were primarily Deltaria and Dundorf.

Meanwhile, western powers including Luthori opened up shop. As the empire exerted it’s influence over the nation, many Luthorian businesses became crucial to the economy, and as such the Luthorian language continued to spread. By the 4th Millenium, Luthorian had become a marginal presence in Voronan life regardless of ethnic group, and all took to speaking it to a degree. The spread of Luthorian was not without it’s defects, and from a natural vowel shift would be derived Voronan English (American Deep Southern English), still used today.

The framework set up under the Banana Leaf Agreement would remain stable until 4966, when a revolution united the nation and proclaimed it a unitary democratic people’s republic. The old gens and classes of old were stripped of relevance, and the nation was united under a proletarian dictatorship and a new national fiction – that not of the Nelayans, nor Namdo – but of Voronans. This new, unitary form of governance and national identity remains to the present day, with more and more growing to think of themselves of Voronans first, and members of their specific ethnic group after that.

It should be noted that, though formerly under Nelayan dominance, the Northeastern Jembar Plain has since become mostly preserved and culturally ambiguous.
The internationally recognized name, Vorona, was derived from the black birds seen on the coast by Deltarian explorers. This name was later chosen by the domestic revolutionary government to represent national unity.
Cultural influences from the real world should be primarily Malay, Javanese, Tagalog, Hmong, and Jeju.

PEOPLES OF VORONA

The Tabang people inhabit the south-east coast of Vorona, and speak the Bigkas language alongside Luthorian. Their origin is unknown, but they are often thought to be one of, if not the earliest inhabitants of Vorona, and descended from capable Dovanian seamen. The Tabang were the rulers of the mighty Wawa (literally: Delta) kingdom, and later founded their own governments under the Banana Leaf Agreement. Today their South-Eastern region is known as Sinag, or the Sunshine Region.

The Namdo people are closely related to the Kyo people of the Kyo peninsula. Both originated from nomadic tribes in northern Dovani, but it is believed that the Namdo people split off and went south, while the Kyo went north. The Namdo languished for centuries as a nomadic people, before eventually discovering Vorona and permanently settling. Since then a unique Namdo culture has taken shape on the island, spurred on and complimented by the other ethnicities. They adopted customs such as the Kyo writing system (Kyogul), and – though independent and unique in almost all aspects - share an incredible amount of cultural similarities with their northern brethren. Their North-Western region is known as Sang Ok-Hwang, roughly meaning "the Jade Emperor's Arboretum", and meant to signify the fertility of the island. Today this is often shortened to Sangok.

The Pebish people are believed to have arrived originally from Yingdala, but soon integrated themselves into Voronan society. The Pebish are the smallest ethnic group in Vorona, and as such have often been forced into submission, integrated, or bullied by other ethnic groups. This tension further increased when Pebish leaders actively collaborated with Yingdalan imperialists, and were put on the throne of the Voronan Kingdom. The Pebish would continue to rule as the highest caste of the Kingdom until it's collapse, after which the Pebish were driven off and re-restablished themselves in the South-West Lam Mus region, which they continue to dominate to this day.

The Malivian people are incorrectly named after an antiquated Deltarian theory that postulated that they originated from the nation of Malivia. This was later to be disproven, and the Malivians are now recognized to have originated most likely from immigrating Shinjalan peoples. Malivians were at first impressed into the Namdo Geumseom Kingdom, but later formed an independent republic that would later be invaded and annexed by the Yingdalan Kingdom of Vorona. The Malivian region of Vorona is known as Mukabaru, and is located in the nation's north in-between Sangok and Hadiah.

The Nelayan people are thought to be the oldest inhabitants of Vorona together with the Tabang. Nelayan tribes eventually succumbed to Tabang invasion by the 6th century, though they later rose up as a Confederacy in the 8th. The Nelayans were the last ethnic group to be conquered by the Yingdalans, and even then maintained a significant presence as a de facto self-governing people within the Jembar Plain. Today, the Jembar Plain - while historically Nelayan - has become culturally mixed, and is now considered a neutral and separate region from North-Eastern Hadiah, which remains Nelayan.

ETHNIC DEMOGRAPHICS

Tabang (Tagalog) - 23%
Nelayan (Javanese) - 22%
Namdo (Jeju Islander) - 20%
Malivian (Malay) - 18%
Pebish (Hmong) - 14%
Yingdalan (Han Chinese) - 1%
Other - 2%

LINGUISTIC DEMOGRAPHICS

The universally-spoken and used language of Vorona is Luthorian (English); but the variant spoken in the nation, Voronan Luthorian, is parallel to Deep Southern American English due to time passing and cultural mixing. In particular, the Namdo accent should be equivalent to that spoken in Alabama, Neyalan with Georgian, Malivian with South Carolinian, Tabang with Mississippian, and Pebish should be equivalent to that spoken by Cajuns in the Louisiana Delta Region. Obviously, none of this is required to be present in as long as the language is primarily kept to Luthorian (English).

Besides Luthorian, the ethnic tongues of Vorona are still widely used in their respective regions, with Luthorian being used as the universal language of inter-ethnic communication. Most commonly, residents will be bilingual - knowing both their regional tongue and Luthorian.

Within the Tabang (Tagalog) Sinag region, Bigkas (Tagalog Language) is spoken. Selucian characters (Latin characters) are most commonly employed, but the traditional Tabang (Baybayin) Alphabet is still used formally.

Nelayan (Javanese) is used in the Hadiah region regularly, and is also conventionally written with Selucian characters, though Kalkali (Sanskrit) was traditionally and is sometimes contemporarily used.

Malivian (Malay) is used in the Mukabaru region, and uses Selucian characters. Historically, Tulisan (Jawi Script) was used, but this has mostly disappeared in the modern day.

Pebish (Hmong) is spoken in the Nam Mus region, and uses the both Selucian alphabet along with Pahawh (the Hmong Alphabet), though Pahawh is a more recent invention from the 5th Millenium. Traditionally, the Yingdalan alphabet (Traditional Chinese) was used, but this was replaced by at first Selucian and later Pahawh characters.

Namdomal, also known as Namdoeo (Jejueo/Jejumal) is closely related to Kyo (Chosonmal/Hangukeo), but mutual intelligibility between the two remains sometimes difficult. Namdo hails from the Sangok region, and is the only native language to employ it's unique alphabet more commonly than the Selucian alphabet, this being Namgeul (the Jeju Alphbet). Namgeul is practically that of Kyogul (Chosongul/Hangul), but is distinct in that many pronunciations are different, and several invented characters not present in Kyogul are used in Namgeul. Selucianized Namdomal is an extreme rarity whose use is practically unheard of. Should players be unable to find enough information on Jeju to use it in an educated manner, standard Korean will suffice.

Although Vorona universally speaks Luthorian, it is not limited to Luthorian and players may employ any of the regional languages appropriately; nor should Voronans follow Luthorian (English) naming conventions. Instead, naming conventions should follow those of the subject's culture or ethnicity - for instance, a Namdo character would appropiately be named using the naming conventions of the Jeju language, this being a surname followed by a personal name. Tabang names are drawn from Tagalog, Nelayan names from Javanese, and so on and so forth.

RELIGIOUS DEMOGRAPHICS

Malivians are more inclined towards Daenism (Buddhism), while Nelayans remain firmly Ahmadist (Muslim). Namdo practice Dongmulyae (written as 동물예/動物禮, IRL equivalent being Korean Shamanism/Musok), whilst the Pebish and Tabang remain mostly traditional but decentralized, following folk religion.

Ahmadism - 27%
Daenism - 23%
Indegenous Religion/Other - 21%
Dongmulyae - 16%
Not Religious/Atheist - 13%
