Message | The Socialist Party heartily supports education in prisons, however, we are opposed to make prisoners do jobs. The purpose of the prison system should be rehabilitation and education, and even though work could be one form of rehabilitation, we fear that this might lead to a situation where prisoners are practically even though not formally forced to do labour in prison. This harms both rehabilitation and employment. |

Message | Considering the wording is 'prisoners CAN do certain jobs --', not 'prisoners MUST do --', we believe the argument brought forward by the Socialist Party is moot (although their concern is understandable). |

Message | This bill is absurd! People are in prisoner to be punished, not to be pampered and treated with extensive rights above those of normal citizens. These people are murders – rapists – serial killers – paedophiles - the IrTC finds it shocking that New Democratic Party wants to educate our prisoners and pay prisoners for work! These people have incurred a massive cost to society, and it is incomprehensible to any sane person that on top of that cost, the state then GIVES them money. We hope this bill which would further cost the government billions – billions which could be used for the education of our own youths -- be never brought to a vote. |

Message | We are surprised at the attitude adopted by the ITC and would point out that by not providing avenues for rehabilitation, the problem is not fixed and they may well return to prison, continuing to incur the costs they mention. In addition, providing educational opportunities is hardly "pampering" or extending rights, since these are things those outside of prison can easily do as well, and we point out that these prisoners have already been deprived of liberty. We feel this investment in society is not simply justified, but it is our duty to ensure lives are wasted trapped in an endless cycle of criminality. |

Message | We are aware of the wording; however, our argument was that even though the convict might not formally be forced to do labour, that might be the practical situation - and that's a risk we're not willing to take. Therefore, the Socialist Party votes against. |

Message | So you would support it if we went for "prisoners interred and do not work"? |
