Bill: Revision of Minimum Wage Law

Details

Submitted by[?]: Drake Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: January 2232

Description[?]:

Our current law allows for a minumum wage that would support a family of four above the poverty line. This law ignores the fact that many people are single, or even do not support themselves at all financially. Lowering the minimum wage would allow higher teenage and college employment as well as creating more jobs which single person households would benifit from. The Drake Party beleives that this measure would substantialy expand our economy and ultimaterly benifit households of all sizes.

MessageI concur with your expressed sentiments, but doesn't this proposal leave single parents high and dry? Is there any way to include these people and others who would need more than a single-person income?

MessageWe disagree with the further exploitation of Sekowo workers! 3 of our regions are already at 100% unemployment and you want to lower the minimum wage even FURTHER?!

This is an outrage!

No one in left out under the current law as the wage is at a level whereby one full time worker could support a family of four. If there is a smaller family, or if that worker is single, then there is more to go around.

However, to just disregard Sekowan families is a disgrace to our Union.

MessageWe understand the sentiments of the Sekowan Freedom Party. The Drake Party believes that we should use more targeted programs for these situations. For instance, instead of paying everyone more which stiffles are economy and reduces the number of jobs, we should have food banks, health care for the poor, and subsidized daycare for poor families. The point the People's Liberation Army brings up is exactly our point as well. Unemployment is too high. We need to increase the number of jobs available. How is high unemployment preferable to lower but still some income? The Drake Party understands that this bill is controversial, but it would be a significant boost for our economy and would yield many long term benefits to all families and all income levels.

MessageHow about we compromise with this:

There shall be a minimum wage at a level considered a "living wage," well above the poverty line for a full time worker.

This would definately lower the minimum wage, but not be too much of a shock to the economy. Later, if you wish, you can seek to lower it even more. For now, however, I would appreciate if we could agree to this.

Messagefair enough. We changed the proposal to reflect this. It is now a slightly higher "living" wage. While the Drake Party will seek further progress, for now this is adequate.

MessageWhile we applaud the efforts of the Drake Party to compromise, we cannot compromise our people's livelihood or their ability to support their families.

MessageIn response to the Drake Party message of 21:42:09, May 21, 2006 CET:
The current unemployment statistics are actually quite good in Bizena and Hikhala: 6.13% and 6.06% unemployment respectively.
I believe the 100% unemployment in the other three states is a hickup related to the fact that these states don't exist.
It remains vital that Hasowar, Undarro and Lorrod be added to the map. This bill, if passed, will not help these regions in any way; only fixing the two-region bug that leaves those states in Limbo can help them.

Yes, while that may be connected to the map, please realize that we were speaking IC and will continue to do so while we attempt to resolve the issue OOC as well.

IC:

6% unemployment is still quite horrendous.
