Bill: Charter School Reform of 2240
Details
Submitted by[?]: Lyika ati Isọdọtun
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: September 2243
Description[?]:
Since charter schools are intended to solve certain issues specific to a given educational locality, we feel that devolving regulatory power over charter schools to local government will allow the localities to develop charter schools that fit their needs. This would also allow for greater creativity and innovation in education, pushing Ikradon's educational system to higher levels of achievement and excellence. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change Charter school policy (free, privately run, publicly funded schools).
Old value:: Only non-profit organizations may establish charter schools.
Current: Charter schools must have a specific focus.
Proposed: Charter school funding, regulation, and development is left up to local governments.

Message | A local government is technically a non-profit organisation... or at least a not-for-profit one. They could always set up a non-profit organisation to run the school. |

Message | The IFP continues to haul out its oft-used criticism of "unfeasible" when referring to policies of devolution, yet we fail to understand its rationale. What is "unfeasible" about allowing individual towns and cities to determine their own courses of action? Why does it matter if one locality differs from another? It is this sort of diversity that strengthens and develops a nation, not the rigid centralization that the IFP seems to embrace. We cannot perceive what it is that the IFP finds so threatening about granting more power to localities--keeping it closer to the individuals who have the greatest stakes in such matters--unless the IFP has grand designs of a centralized, authoritarian state for Ikradon in which all power radiates from a single source, eliminating the need for such concepts as democracy and individual liberty. |

Message | We apologize for the particularly acerbic tone of our recent statement. Our Assembly member was in a particularly nasty mood when he made that speech. By no means do we wish to suggest that the IFP is plotting an authoritarian takeover of the Ikradonian government, nor do we wish to have anything but congenial relations with the rest of our Assembly colleagues. -Arjun Ayaz, FFP Spokesperson |
