MessageColleagues,

I must express my grave concerns about the proposals put forward by some of our colleagues on the other side of the aisle. These proposals represent a direct threat to the values of justice, equality, and democracy that we hold dear as left-wing socialists.

Let us start with Article 1, which proposes to change the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes. The current policy allows for cannabis to be used as a sedative for patients in pain. However, the proposed change would give local governments the power to decide whether or not to legalize medicinal cannabis. This is a dangerous proposal that would lead to a patchwork of inconsistent policies and hinder patients' access to essential medical care.

Moving on to Article 2, which proposes to allow paramilitaries as part of each political party. This is a shocking proposal that threatens to undermine the rule of law and democratic institutions. Paramilitaries are illegal for a reason, and allowing them to operate within political parties would only lead to violence, intimidation, and repression.

Article 3 proposes to require all businesses to be run by Democratic Workers' Councils. While we support the principles of worker democracy and empowerment, this proposal goes too far. It would stifle innovation, competition, and economic growth by mandating a specific organizational structure for all businesses.

Article 4 proposes to devolve abortion policies to local governments. This is a direct attack on women's reproductive rights and would lead to a situation where access to abortion is determined by geography, rather than medical necessity.

Article 5 proposes to make euthanasia illegal but not considered murder. This is a cruel and heartless proposal that would deny terminally ill patients the right to a dignified death. It is a clear violation of human rights and medical ethics.

Article 6 proposes to remove the official government position on climate change. This is a dangerous proposal that would allow the government to abdicate its responsibility to address one of the most pressing issues facing our planet.

Finally, Article 7 proposes to require companies to distribute a majority fraction of their profits to employees. While profit-sharing programs can be a valuable tool for promoting worker empowerment and reducing income inequality, this proposal goes too far. It would create a burdensome regulatory environment that would stifle entrepreneurship and innovation, leading to lower economic growth and job creation.

In conclusion, I urge my colleagues to reject these proposals and stand up for the values of justice, equality, and democracy that we hold dear. Thank you.

Julia Cottonstone, MP.
