Bill: Library Funding Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: CNT/AFL

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: April 2075

Description[?]:

Recognizing the merits of libraries, as centres of cultural and social activities and as a place to further knowledge and continue education, we propose the government provides local government with generous funding to establish wide networks of public libraries, available free of charge to any and every human being within the borders of Lodamun, regardless of any physical or mental characteristics.

There will be no federal government interference in the running of library activites, and all materials, printed or electronic, may be stored or lended in these libraries.

Local governments may decide on censorship methods to prevent minors from accessing innapropriate content.

MessageSupported, of course. Especially given the defeat of the free broadcasting education bill, hopefully we will at least be willing to grant free access to public lending libraries for all citizens.

MessagePlease explain why money extorted from some through taxation can be justifiably spent in this manner...
While I think that libraries are a wonderful way to spend your own money-why should the government spend tax money in a way that will severely harm business for bookstores and the like.

MessageWill these libraries contain all types of publication, or are they to be havens of political propaganda.
Do we have a clear commitment to there being no restrictions whatsoever on the printed and electronic material that will be made available to the people through these libraries that are funded involuntarily by the people?

MessageLeave this to the local governments. If you are going to spend tax money on books, at least let that money go to books in the same area as the person being taxed.

MessageYes thank you. Now are the archives of material in these libraries to be available to all and every citizen, regardless of age, colour, creed, etc.?

Be careful here.

MessageSo now the government is to provide pornography to children?

I think that is not a good idea.

MessageThe point of this little piece of entrapment was to illustrate how ideals can not always be translated into practice. They tend to have unwanted consequences. The ideal of providing educational material and culture to all for free is very nice, but there has to be some kind of selectivity involved. Now as soon as you introduce any selectivity at all you are introducing a censorship method. Placing this in the hands of the government is all very well where the intentons are pure and honest, but unfortunately people, and the censorship office will be staffed by people, are not always pure and idealistic.

As such the government can not provide material free without running the risk of perverting the freedom of information that is essential to a functioning democracy. The provision of information, of all types, be it libraries, media or education, has to be independent of the government.

So we will vote against this bill to protect our democracy.

MessageWhat makes you so sure a private library wouldn't provide sexually explicit material to children (Or are they called Juvenile Information Consumers now?)?

MessageBecause in doing so they would be in breach of the existing laws. This law creates a loophole through which children could be exploited unethically.

And you may call children whatever you like, so long as the term clearly denotes them. If you wish to aply ridiculous PC speak terms to a market driven concept then you may. We prefer to call them children.

MessageThe local government shall decide all materials in the library. The federal government will not peddle pornography to children, but we will not stop local governments from doing so, perhaps the courts can.

We've adopted a reasonable compromise, where local governments fund the libraries, raising their own taxes.

We would also like to move this to a vote, as soon as the Tuesday is Coming speaker removes his lips from the rear end of the speaker of the Adam Smith Party.

MessageWe are happy to accept this compromise. It will be up to the local voters to decide whether they wish to have censored information or a state government that could be accused of corrupting minors.

The honorable speaker for the CNT/AFL , being a bounder and a cad apparently, would do well to rcognise that the rear end of the ASP is quite comfortably ensconced in the few parliamentry seats we own, and stop abusing parliamentary pivelege.
