Details
Submitted by[?]: Catholic Workers Union
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: April 2265
Description[?]:
Our nation must face two problems at once. We are a nation with a large elderly population, many of whom are overworked and continue to labor beyond an age that is reasonably suitable. We are also a nation with an unemployment problem. To kill two birds with one stone, we suggest that the retirement age be lowered so that more of our elderly can enjoy the benefits of recreation; and, the jobs they will vacate can be handed over to a younger generation. |

Message | But this doesn't solve the problems of unemployment, it reinforces them. The State will have to pay even more welfare benefits (unless we're also going to cut pensions, which I doubt will win support). Skilled workers, who have built up their abilities over time, will find themselves jobless and replaced with unskilled, younger, cheaper replacements without being able to criticise the inherent ageism - because the Government has already endorsed that ageism. At the heart of our opposition, though, are two beliefs. Firstly, that fifty-five year-olds have the same physical capabilities in modern society as others. Secondly, that the solution to unemployment isn't fewer workers - it's more jobs. |

Message | We currently have a huge surplus, why not spend this on an excellent pension benefits? The elderly will then have a large amount of income to spend where they please and bolster demand, etc. Basic Keynesian economics. And doesn't any retirement age "endorse" ageism? Since a retirement age is obviously necessary to prevent eighty-year olds from working at local grocery stores, can't that retirement age be dropped even lower so even the elder middle-aged can enjoy a few years of relaxation? The truth is that a lower retirement age will both create MORE jobs and bolster recreation. |

Message | Any argument based on "basic Keynesian economics" has one big flaw, and it's right in the middle of those quotation marks. |
