Message | I am opposed to gated communities for many reasons. First of all, it is simply a modern form of segregation, the rich can separate themselves from the poor, they can buy themselves a better life. Secondly it creates a "them and us" mentality in society, with the people not in the gated communities jealous of those who are in and those who are in afraid and suspicious of those who are out. Thirdly it encourages people who live within these communities to care less about the outside world and their problems, why bother tackling poverty, everybody you know in your community is well off. Finally, prejudices develop when people do not mix, gated communities will only make that worse. |

Message | "The arguments which you have given for the removal of gated communities works against you aswell as for you. True it creates a 'them and us' mentality but personally I would rather this than try and force everyone to live in harmony when we all know that could never happen. Also you mention that people in gated communities care little for the outside world, well for some this may be true but mostly people in gated communities are more aware of the global situation than those who dont live there and they are the ones who fight for changes. The common person fights only for the betterment of themselves because to do otherwise would codemn themselves to death. We cannot create an equal society, there is no such thing, communism claims such a feat but it never sticks to it's principles, greed is human nature and gated communities are merely a by-product of greed." -- Michael Makaveilli |

Message | If gated communities can be set up by the state, as well as by 'private' agencies... then the state can maintain gated communities that unite persons across boundaries of race, gender, class... or any other divide. While state AND private party can maintain gated communities, we see no reason to oppose the gated community concept. |
