MessageYou get your loudest yes from us. ID cards are a waste of money and a huge injustice.

MessageI see no reason to outlaw ID cards they provide a great degree of convenience , I know I use mine all the time , that said trying to use them for security by making them compulsory/carried at all times is a waste of money and infringes on liberty I support the current state.

MessageCan someone PLEASE tell me exactly WHAT is wrong with ID cards, other than "I hate them because I'm paranoid"?

I don't care very much either way on this issue, but I'm exasperated by the apparently dumb ideological opposition to ID cards. Come up with some sort of argument, PLEASE!

MessageExpense.
Ineffectiveness.
Obligation.

Expense as in they cost a lot of money nationwide - Britain is about to spend many times more money on introducing ID cards than it does on intelligence. That's a shameful waste.

Ineffecitveness. As in any serious terrorist group is going to be able to fake them. That or find an insider at the appropriate point - ie. at the airport departure lounge or in the passport / ID agency. A group who can't do that aren't anything to worry about! Intel is the only way.

Obligation. Anyone who favours ID cards also support "stop and search?" Black kids and arabs get harassed endlessly in public by keen police, while others pass by. ID cards will just be the perfect excuse for a quick arrest and detention of today's least favourite minority!

The argument you've already heard I'm sure is the one that with mandatory ID, going outside is illegal unless you have your "human license" with you. But I think I've covered the main corners.

Btw: yay scrapping ID! We're winning!

MessageI wasn't aware that "catching terrorists" was even an issue in the ID card discussion. We've had ID cards here in Romania since... well, since forever, it seems, and there's no discussion whatsoever on scrapping them. They're not supposed to help fight crime, they're supposed to provide you with a handy way to verify your identity every time you go to the bank, or to the town hall, or to any public institution...

And obligation isn't an issue either as long as you don't make it compulsory for people to carry their ID cards on them at all times.

Expense? Maybe, but I'm pretty sure the Romanian ID card system is a lot cheaper than yours. And ID cards can save a lot of money too, by removing the need for many other forms and papers.
