Bill: Mandatory National Anthem Singing Repeal

Details

Submitted by[?]: Telamon Royalist Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: February 2288

Description[?]:

Currently, it is mandatory to sing our National Anthem at the beginning of all sessions of education in the Commonwealth. Given that our National Anthem refers to God, and our laws call for a seperation of church and state, this is not acceptable. The National Anthem is beautiful, and a wonderful symbol of our country, but personal rights are far more important than warbling out a song. It is unTelemonian to force someone to act contrary to their religious perogatives if those perogatives do not endanger anyone else, so this must be corrected. It is our intent that the anthem still be PLAYED, and that respect be shown, but it will no longer be mandatory to SING it.

MessageWe maintain our staunch opposition. Our children must be fully functional members of society, and that includes a certain love of country. Patriotism is not a vice.

MessageWe agree that patriotism is not a vice, but equally it is not something that can or should be imposed. The expression of one's patriotism should be personal and a personal choice. We therefore do not support either the mandatory singing or the mandatory playing of the national anthem (particularly in its present form!!) at the start of the school day. If a school wishes to do so then that is up to them (as parents and pupils would then have the choice of schools that did and did not play the anthem), but forcing it upon people is not something that we think is desirable.

Random fact: When it comes to creating a Cultural Protocol in a Culturally Open nation, players are not necessarily required to provide a plausible backstory for how the nation's cultural background developed. However, the provision of a plausible backstory may be a factor in whether Moderation approves the Cultural Protocol if players in surrounding nations question its appropriateness for their region of the game map.
