Bill: Divorce Legalization Act of 2292
Details
Submitted by[?]: Telamon Royalist Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: February 2294
Description[?]:
People should not feel trapped in their lives. However, because of the government's current divorce policy, many people are. The government should have no place in deciding whether or not a reason to break off a relationship is 'legitimate' or not. Do we not trust the people in the marrage to know what's going on in the relationship better than some bureaucrat in Ferescia does? |

Message | "I understand what the honourable Mr. Ryan says, but the fact remains that in a multicultural nation like Telamon, the morality of one portion of the community might well be different than the morality of another portion of the community. For instance, I am homosexual. This is perfectly acceptable to certain members of our society. And there are other members of our society who believe I should be heterosexual. Is it our place to determine that one or the other opinion on this issue is more or less valid than the other? Because that is what you are suggesting, that one opinion on a topic of morality, namely divorce, should be sanctioned by the state as superior to another.' --Frank Combes, TRP MP for Sevenshire South |

Message | While we agree with what Mr. Ryan of the IADP says, that the sanctity of marriage should indeed be protected by the state, and we in all ways respect this sanctity, we also believe that each individual should have a freedom of choice, and should be able to decide whether or not they wish to divorce, with or without a grounded cause. As such, this is a dilemma to us, but we would rather insure that citizens make careful choices about marriage, rather than going on a wild fling. As this bill would seem to give more leeway to the latter option, we therefore stand against it. |

Random fact: Cabinet ministers who disagree seriously with the head of government would usually be expected to resign. Parties within the cabinet may attempt to manoeuvre to replace the head of government though, for example by proposing a new cabinet bill or voting for an early election. |
