Message | "Second hand smoke is too great a danger. This bill would endanger the health of our citizens and is an attempt to revitalize the devastated tobacco industry in Telamon. We stand strongly against." -Tory Clark IADP MP |

Message | "Many times this has come to the floor, and many times I have stood here and reminded this august body that the people placed at greatest risk by the legalization of tobacco are those who cannot choose not to smoke -- children who have to live in smoke-filled environments. As long as children can't defend themselves from the actions of adults, it remains the government's duty to do so for them. We will never vote to legalize this." -- Dr. William Vandermere, MP for Sevenoaks Valley |

Message | "The state does not have the right to engage in this level of interference in the lives of its citizens. Yes we all know that smoking is bad for you and yes the state should educate people about the risks. But the government cannot and should not ban smoking - it is up to individuals to make that choice for themselves. We must not be a nanny state forcing people to live their lives in a set way that some members of this house believe is the best way for them - we must leave it up to the people themselves to have the freedom to choose how to live their lives. I also shouldn't have to tell those members who support the current legislation that it does not work. It is not an enforcable law. We cannot police private homes and there is already a hugely lucrative business in illegally smuggled cigarettes here in Telamon. These cigarrettes have not been through any form of quality control and actually constitute an increased risk to health than legal ones would. People who do develop illnesses from smoking are also deterred from seeking healthcare in case they are discovered and prosecuted by the police. Not to mention the fact that current law diverts huge amounts of precious police resources from more serious crimes. Finally I say to this house that it is a bizarre state of affairs where we cannabis is legal (which we support) but tobacco and smoking is not. We therefore support wholeheartedly this amendment to the law. --Herbert Kitchener UCA MP for Telapolis South |

Message | I will not support a bill that puts my life and the lives of others in the hands of the minority who smoke. As I have previously stated, the Centre Party does not, never has and will never support smoking in any form. This applies to drugs, drink and tobacco. I urge all right-minded parties to vote against this proposal. (why is it double spacing? odd, I hope it doesn't show up that way, but if it does, I apologise in advance) |
