Details

Submitted by[?]: Leftsocialist Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: August 2310

Description[?]:

To promote the peace and understanding between the peoples of the world it is necessary to promote global integration. To make this possible and credible we must change our policy on the use of nuclear weapons. We should waive the right to "first-strike" use and replace that policy with a policy of retaliation - this will promote peace and stability in the international community.

MessageThe proposal should speak for itself, but i think the issue at stake is to important to be partisan about. It is in the interest of our nation that we preserve peacefull and stabil international relations and in the longer term a policy of retaliation instead of a"first-strike" policy will favour such a development. Better to start now on strengthening peacefull international ties than wait and find out that it is too late. I hope the Protectorate Party sees our point, and if not would explain why.

MessageOur policy has always been to promote peace. However, the reality of the world is that if we do not have a strong military we can expect to become prey for the imperialistic nations out there. Thus we have established the first strike policy, which if should a nation invade us we reserve the right to launch and use nuclear weapons as part of our defense. Thus making ourselves less of a target toward these nations. We further avoid tangled webs of alliances, never pledging ourselves to defend another nation's interests.
Our military is for the most part weak. We have little in the way of ground or air forces. We instead devote our money toward patrol boats and subs. The patrol boats guard our shores and our subs are deployed across the oceans to permit our nuclear strike if needed. Thus our opinion has always been that by keeping our option open on this matter, and making sure it is known to the international community, we can devote our governmental spending toward social programs and improving our way of life.

MessageI see your point of view - especially regarding tangled alliances, nevertheless I find it to be rather extreem to hold the option of nuclear first-strike open. Such an act would surely worsen matters. The international community wouldn't stand for such brutality.
Off course it isn't an easy decision but I still think we should adopt the policy of retaliation instead of first-strike. Leaving the possiblity of first strike open is a two-edged weapon - if we are attacked conventionally and don't reply with nuclear weapons we loose credibility and thereby the deterring effect is gone. On the other hand if we do use them we suddenly could find ourselves in a situation that could spiral totally out of control - worst case being a nuclear holocaust. I hope you can see my point of view - even if you can't support the proposal.

MessageWe understand your point, but feel by avoiding conflict first and only using them in retaliation after giving warning makes our policy brutal but fair.
Perhaps a change to
The nation reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in retaliation to any attack

to help clarify our policy.

(OOC: its a new option since our laws where put in place)

MessageI guess it's just a difference of opponions so i'll put it to a vote. Basically we feel that nuclear weapons should only be used reciprocally and not as a response to conventional attacks.
