Bill: End to Double Taxation

Details

Submitted by[?]: AM Radical Libertarian Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: April 2344

Description[?]:

We are currently taxing all income, then taxing the same money again when it is spent. This is unjust and should be ended, since with the current surplus there is no need for this revenue.

MessageAt the current time, removal of this double tax would result in a surplus of over 8,000,000,000 LIK, which is surely adaquate for our needs.

MessageTaxes on consumption are easier to collect, and in fact most libertarians other than the ARLP would prefer to lower income taxes rather than consumption taxes.

If we have a 8 billion LIK surplus, much of that should be used to restore funding to the police (internal affairs) and justice departments, not to add another big tax cut.

MessageThe Finance Minister incumbent would support lowering the tax, say to 15%, but not abolishing it at this time.

He would also be open to negotiating cuts in income tax, if a strong case can be made...

MessageWe would hope that the LITP is willing to propose enough money for the criminal justice system (internal affairs and justice) to as to make sure criminals are caught and locked up.

That was indicated to be on the table if the PLPL would allow their spending cuts so as to bring us out of deficit spending. A quote from Internal Affairs minister Dana Barlag: "We are forced at this point to investigate only the most heinous crimes. We lack the resources to go after thieves or even armed robbers unless the victim can tell us who the perpetator was and help us to prove it. The crime rate is skyrocketing, and can only be brought under control if we can rehire the police we have had to place on indefinite leave."

MessageWe of the AMRLP would agree with the PLPL that a consumption tax is preferable to an income tax, but have a grasp of the realities of the situation which indicate that abolishing the income tax for a pure consumption tax would not fly in the current legislative climate. Therefore, in the interest of not taxing twice, we propose the elimination of the sales tax as a passable, though less ideologically pure, alternative.

Our other purpose in bringing this bill to the table is to eliminate the large surplus. Giving the government money without clear instructions on how to spend it is always dangerous, and leads to black projects, increased corruption, and expectations that the situation will continue. If the government does not have a specific need to spend money, let the people who earned it have it.

MessageFor the record, we would oppose abolishing the income tax, as progressivity is highly important to us.

However, we are happy to support getting up to half our revenue through consumption taxes rather than income taxes, keeping income taxes low on all much the wealthy Likatonians.

The alternatives, of higher middle class income taxes or of cuts to essential programs, are far worse in our opinion.

8,000,000,000 LIK, can used to invest in something.
