Bill: Privatization of Defense Industries

Details

Submitted by[?]: The Freeman's Society

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: February 2347

Description[?]:

At current the Republic of Baltusia limits the product and research capabilities of the defense markets by discouraging and making competition illegal. We should all deeply consider the values of Baltusia and consider what we're doing to ourselves collectively by limiting private industry into the defense sector. With a private industry defense market competition will drive innovation and with this, the Republic of Baltusia will be in a better position internationally and for our security domestically.

-The Nation's Defense Industry.

-The state owns all defense industries.

Alternatives:
o The state owns national defense industries but these exist alongside privately owned defense industries.
o Defense industries are privately owned but subsidized by the state.
o Defense industries are privately owned and not subsidized.

MessageIndeed we are. What loyalty to our nation does a private contractor have? None. What stops them from selling our secrets to another nation? Nothing. What's the point in having private and public defence contractors when we should always go public to avoid aforementioned problems? None.

MessageOrange is right. However, we have no competition to help fertalize the industries. Therefore, I would vote yes if it were changed to "Defense industries are privately owned but subsidized by the state." That way they would be less likely to betray us, because we could shut them down, or something.

Message", or something."
That bit right there really sums up how well you know your topic.

Subsidisation gives us less control over the defence industry. Even if we withdraw our support, there's no guarantee that a disloyal company would collapse. Further, if we did have to withdraw our support, it would be because the damage has already been done: we've been betrayed to Deltaria and their coming with their poorly-trained yet fanatical soldiers to massacre our children and rape our women.

The only way to ensure that we do not get betrayed is to bring the defence industry as close to the government as possible where it can be closely watched. In essence, the way it is now.

"However, we have no competition to help fertalize the industries"
The aforementioned Deltarian invasion scenario should fertilise plenty of engineers' imaginations.

MessageThe almost secret Pantian death squads lie in waiting for them *shakes fist*.

We are unwavered from our original decision to keep this a nationals only defense industry.

MessageRespectfully,

In regards to the question of domestic loyalty in question to private defense contractors within our Republic is a fallacy. If our Republic can not stand as a bastion of hope, liberty and independence we're in a dire fix! Should our government and my respected colleagues from the Orange Party feel the need to impose patriotism upon our industry?

What makes any company loyal to the country in which it resides? A functional and effective government. What does this mean in specific? While I am by no measure an expert on the topic in whole it is clear that a strong stance on a free and fair market places to encourage growth and innovation. With a strong government policy that stands behind it's ideals of capitalism and allows the market to play our on it's own natural accord we've no fear. Private companies fear governments with -too- much intervention. We're a government not economists. We should encourage an environment for our nations leaders within their respect industries to grow uncompromisingly and without fear of imposed patriotism. If you want loyalty, it must be deserved-to fear to the otherwise shows a clear weakness.

MessageYour argument makes the assumption that the defence contractors in question are in fact of Baltusian origin. Given that the government has had a monopoly on the defence industry for at least a century, there are no reputable nor quality defence contractors left in the nation. This means we have to look overseas for our weapons and we all know how well connected the Batory Dynasty is.

"We're a government not economists"
Exactly. The primary function of a national government is the repulsion of foreign invaders. By owning our defence industry, we can best fulfill that function to the extent that there is no defence "industry", only the vertically integrated military of Baltusia. It is you party that seems to equate defence with business, which tells us and the people of Baltusia that their safety is for sale.

"Private companies fear governments with -too- much intervention."
Who gives a crap what private companies fear? As a part of the economy, they're there to serve us, not the other way around.

"If you want loyalty, it must be deserved-to fear to the otherwise shows a clear weakness."
We have loyalty. Why try to fix what's not broken?
