Bill: Agricultural policy relating to GM crops bill

Details

Submitted by[?]: Neo-Marxist revolutionary Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: March 2084

Description[?]:

Until it can be proven that there are no long-term ill-effects to the production, and subsequent consumption of Genetically Modified crops, then we of the Neo-Marxist Revolutionary party do call for the ban on the production and sale of these crops for public consumption. Reseach however will be encouraged to provide better evidence both for and against the arguement for their production.

The planned phasing of this bill is as follows:

The first phase would be the total and complete ban of GM Crops for commerical production and sale, while issuing liscences to accredited research institutes and facilities for the exploration of this line of agricultural development.

Should the research onto these new foods become fruitful, the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Agriculture would report such to the Government and ask for permission to begin production of the GM Crops, thus allowing for further testing.

After said testing, should the crops be viable, not a threat to the local environment, and not harmful to the human body, we would recommend to the Government that the GM crop in question be released for sale and production on commercial levels.

MessageWhy research if you can't do anything with the end product. Not that I think you should be doing much - if anything - in the field of GM reseach. I would support this because it cuts down the ability to do things in the field of GM crops but I would personally legislate further.

MessageLabor opposes the government's knee-jerk reaction against GM crops. Labor believes while consumers have a right to know whether the products they are buying contain GM materials or not, it would be unwise to dismiss out of hand, in the name of sheer populism, a technology which has such potential to improve the quality of life for every Beluzian.

MessageBasically you do the research first and then, if the research ordains that it is safe for the products to be consumed then allow them to be eaten. Not before when you don't know about any of the potential health risks.

MessageThat isn't what you are proposing. You are proposing to ban the production and sale of GM crops.

MessageRead all of the description it is indeed what I am proposing. Yes I am saying to ban the sale and consumption of GM crops, until said crops can be found to be edible and not cause any potential health risks. Hence why research will be allowed to continue.

MessageGiven my party's possession of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Agriculture, I think I can speak for what the exact plans - so long as ST&A remains with the Free Beluzian Party - for Genetically Modified Crops.

The first phase would be the total and complete ban of GM Crops for commerical production and sale, while issueing liscences to accredited research institutes and facilities for the exploration of this line of agricultural development.

Should the research onto these new foods become fruitful (Heheh), the Ministry would report such to the Government and ask for permission to begin production of the GM Crops, thus allowing for further testing.

After said testing, should the crops be viable, not a threat to the local environment, and not harmful to the human body, we would recommend to the Government that the GM crop in question be released for sale and production on commercial levels.

As such, we do support the current law.

MessageAs long as its very strict and takes a very long time. I don't know much about the situation but isn't there a major problem with bees having nothing to polinate?

Instead of increasing yields/Ha I think we should invade another province and evict all the residents. This would allow us to spread out a bit...

MessageMuch thanks to the FBP for detailing the plans, those were indeed what we had in mind. However we could not think how to phrase it. So many thanks.
Would you allow me to add your explanation to the bills description?

MessageFeel free, NMRP.

As for the PAL's comments towards agression, I have suggested taking a less friendly stance towards one particular nation...

In a polite sort of way.

((OOC: It'd be fun to RP a war!))

MessageNever! I do not joke! After we have taken a few provinces from everyone in Artania (and wiped out those pesky internationalist Rutanians) I suggest that we increase space funding then begin the planting crops on a nearby selestial body. If we still feel a strain on the food supply I suggest we begin to wipe out all political activists that do not share similar feelings to either the PAL or any party that is the Particracy equivalent of the OMRLP ( http://www.omrlp.com/ sorry for realworld example). This will cut the population down to about 5% of its present total (me, my granny, the undead and a hot slavegirl ... - make that several) and will leave us with no problems with food or political differences. I will rule the country whilst making it my mission to repopulate the Beluzian Empire and create little-MEs; the undead will be split into vampires and neo-classical zombies, the vampires being resonsible for defence and the latter taking care of agricultural output; my granny would knit jumpers for the vampires with an image of my head on the front (cheesy smile as standard).

These, I think you will find, are reasonable answers to the problems you have raised.

MessageI don't know what the hell your all talking about, there is absolutely no way I'd allow the govt. to regulate my crops. I do like the sound of what the PAL suggested there towards the end however, and would be willing to reflect upon it at a later juncture.

MessageOur party is very much split on this issue. We see the need for research, but we are afraid that this bill will ban the production and sales of GM crops forever. Can we get reassurances that this is the case?

We will change our vote and endorse this as a temporary ban on the production and selling of GM crops if there will be support an SLP proposal to allow the production of carefully researched GM crops later in this cabinet period.

MessageIf the research says that the crops are not harmful then there will be production; that is the only case in which production will be undertaken.
