Description[?]:
The National Democratic Party, formerly the Baltusian Democracy Movement, is a big-tent political party originally founded in Santiago by former Governor Richard DeSilva, who was previously a member of the National Objectivist Party and briefly nonpartisan. Once a political action organization and grassroots movement, the BDM was reorganized into a formal political party by Jonas Burkhardt, a prominent businessman who succeeded Mr. DeSilva after stepping down from leadership of the organization. Continuing to commit to a strengthening of Baltusia's democratic tradition and its institutions, the NDP remains firm in its strong anti-extremist stance, a promotion of liberal democratic values and responsible government, as well as the preservation of Baltusian federalism. Like the BDM before it, the NDP also claims direct lineage from both the United Democratic and Republican Parties, the NDP has somewhat eschewed Baltusian Democracy for the time being on the advice of its leader Jonas Burkhardt, encouraging political pragmatism and increased cooperation with other political parties. The ideology of Baltusian Democracy claims that the two-party period during the rule of the UDP was the "golden age" of Baltusian politics, ushering in an unprecedented era of national stability, global cooperation, and economic strength. Ideology the NDP during its time as the BDM was big-tent and populist in nature. While it has retained some of these core values, the party under the leadership of Burkhardt has shifted somewhat further to the right economically, speaking out more in favor of economic liberalism. Nationally the party is organized by a National Committee, of which Mr. Burkhardt serves as Chair. National Chair: Jonas Burkhardt (since 5416) A prominent venture capitalist and influential member of the state-level Attano Republican Party, Jonas Burkhardt has made a name for himself as financing a variety of projects in the finance, technology and (to a lesser degree) the automotive industry. Known for a shrewd business acumen and a trailblazing attitude, he saddled up with the BDM not long after its founding, and after a string of electoral failures, gradually began to speak out about the desire for internal change within the organization. Eventually after Mr. DeSilva's stepping down, Burkhardt won amongst a field of candidates at the 5416 National Congress in the party's home turf in Puerto Vallejo. Past leaders - Richard DeSilva (since 5394-5416) The former Governor of Santiago, Richard DeSilva held a commanding presence over the BDM for most of its existence, managing to hold the position of leadership despite a rollercoaster of poor electoral showings over the years. Eventually, as calls for change grew too loud to ignore, Mr. DeSilva opted to step down from leadership of the movement, calling a National Congress in Puerto Vallejo, where he was succeeded by Jonas Burkhardt after winning a majority of delegates. A former member of the National Objectivist Party, Mr. DeSilva left the organization due to conflicting views on policy. Afterward, he served as an independent Governor of his home state, before forming the Baltusian Democracy Movement in 5394. Prior to entering politics, Mr. DeSilva led a variety of careers, most notably as a naval officer, and a practicing lawyer for the Santiago-based firm Thomas & Thomas; to this day, he is still licensed to the state bar. Ideology: » Baltusian Democracy (see below) » Federalism » Baltusian nationalism » Economic liberalism » Anti-extremism » Populism Political position: Big-tent 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆: 𝗔𝗻 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 Throughout Baltusia's history prior to the 21st century the nation was governed under a two-party system, under a variety of parties that existed. In the centuries following, the nation has been governed successively by multi-party regimes; this was briefly broken during the 4400s, when the Baltusians for Change pressure group sought to reorganize the nation's political structure back towards this course, which it achieved successfully. By several mergers, the political arena coalesced around two parties during this period: the United Democratic Party, a big-tent liberal party, and the Republican Party of Baltusia, or simply the Republicans, a catch-all conservative party. The period is referred to as the "Golden Age" of Baltusian democracy by political analysts and supporters of the ideology, arguing that an unprecedented period of national stability was able to be achieved, the economy of Baltusia rising significantly, and the government exhibited an increased presence on the world stage with the signing of new diplomatic agreements with several countries. Supporters of Baltusian Democracy decry the current state of affairs affecting the country today. Arguing that the average voter is confused by the intensely dogmatic nature of multi-party politics, they name it as the direct result of the rise of political extremism on both sides of the spectrum, and remark with strong contempt how close the nation has come to a dictatorship, especially given Baltusia's longstanding history of stable liberal democracy. As such, supporters of the ideology staunchly argue for a return to a two-party system and a streamlining of the electoral process, to make the Baltusian government a rigorously efficient political machine, one free of petty-party squabbles and divided and deadlocked government. OOC: If anyone wishes to play as Baltusian Democracy supporters or would like further context or help on understanding the ideology, please do not hesitate to contact me in-game or on the Baltusian discord; though I strongly prefer the latter, as I am much more likely to respond to it quicker. Random fact: Any RP law granting extraordinary "emergency powers" or dictator-like powers to a government must be passed by at least a 2/3rds majority, but (like all RP laws) may always be overturned by a simple majority vote of the legislature. |
