Description[?]:

= Introduction

The National Party (sometimes referred to as the Nationals) is a right-wing political party active in the Commonwealth of Hutori. The Party has enjoyed reasonable political success with strong results in the 4488, 4492 and 4493 general elections. From 4492 onwards the Nationals have combined a continued hardline stance on immigration and border security combined with economically liberals policies designed to reduce the role of the state. The party is pro-universal free health care and supportive of welfare although has in recent years supported a reduction in some universal benefits and an increased role for the private sector in health care provision.

= Foundation

The National Party was formed in March 4486 by a number of dissidents from the Liberal National Party. In separating from the LNP the dissidents, led by Louise McDonald, advocated focusing on immigration concerns while simultaneously supporting state intervention in the economy and the welfare state. In June 4487 the small Adelia based Hosian Democratic Party merged into the National Party giving the party a strong network in preparation for the general election in 4488.

= Electoral Performance

The National Party took over 16% of the vote in the 4488 general election, winning 33 seats across Hutori. The party was most successful in Adelia where the party took 33% of the vote and gained 14 new MP’s. Analysis from the election showed that the party had polled well in poorer urban and rural communities amongst voters who had either previously abstained or had voted for the Ultrackian Socialist Party.

In the following election in 4492 the Nationals gained considerable support in the province of Kenai following the adoption of a platform espousing reduced capabilities for the Hutorian armed forces including the decommissioning of Hutori’s nuclear weapon capability. They achieved 33.5% of the vote in Kenai and 29.4%, so that 27 of the party’s 41 MPs came from these two provinces.

= Ideology

The Nationals are described as a right-wing party, this typically comes from the party’s hard-line anti-immigrant stance. During the period 4486-4492 the party advocated state intervention in the economy, although from 4492 onwards the Nationals have slowly moved into a more traditional and conventional centre-right approach to the economics, supporting a reduction in government provision of infrastructure in a landmark Infrastructure and Energy Reform Act passed in Jun 4494.

Two policy areas separate the National Party from the other active political parties in Hutori. Since 4487 the Nationals have actively courted Hosian voters, especially in the province of Adelia, but also in other areas. 59% of Hutorians label themselves Hosian and the Nationals have received strong support from some minor Hosian churches. The Nationals have pushed several pro-Hosian proposals forward although there was a strong backlash from all other parties in Hutori against an attempt to make Hosianism a mandatory national religion. Secondly the National Party, despite its right-wing image, has pursued defence policies that are out of kilter with all other parties in Hutori. The Nationals proposed abolishing Hutori’s nuclear capability, although whether as a pacifist measure or an isolationist measure is unclear.

Other than hard line immigration policies the most consistent measures that the Nationals have pushed forward in Parliament is efforts to increase the rural economy by relaxing environmental regulation, supporting subsidies for low income farmers and encouraging resource extraction and increased fishing. The Party considers its core support base to be rural and coastal communities focused on primary industrial activity.

= Leadership

The Nationals have been led by Louise McDonald (b 4450) since 4486. Louise was first elected as a Liberal National MP in 4480, although fell out with many of her colleagues and in 4486 left the LNP caucus. Louise has largely driven the ideological direction of the National Party, although has been happy to delegate reponsibility for policy to specialists within the party and acquiesced to the party’s change in direction on economic and defence issues.

The leader of the party sits in Parliament and is elected at the start of each Parliament after a General election. There is a scope to remove a leader although so far Louise McDonald hasn’t been challenged.

= Government Participation

Upon its formation in 4486 one of the core aims of the Nationals was to get the Labour Party, Sutton Nationalists and Socialist Party out of government. This was achieved in 4488 with the Nationals joining a coalition government with Hutori First, the Liberals and the Peoples Party. This coalition agreement lasted until after the 4493 elections, following the 4492 election Hutori First made it clear that they were no longer willing to work with the National Party.

May 4488 – Jul 4493 – Interior, Justice, Infrastructure and Transport, Health and Social Services and Education and Culture.

May 4498 – June 4501 - Interior, Justice, Infrastructure and Transport, Health and Social Services and Education and Culture. In coalition with the Conservative, Liberal and Peoples Parties.

= Support Base

At successive elections in 4492 and 4493 the party secured 20% of the vote and with the exception of the gains in Kenai in 4492 the support for the party has been remained consistent across all three contested elections. The party currently has four core electorates;

- Rural and Coastal supporters, particularly those involved in primary industries such as logging, fishing or farming
- Religious right – a number of evangelical and fundamentalist Hosian communities offer strong support to the party, particularly in Adelia
- Pacifists – the party has emerged as the most strongly anti-nuclear weapons party in Hutori and has won support in areas of Kenai on the back of this stance.
- Nationalists – the party won strong support in a some white working class communities throughout Hutori.

= Criticism

The party has come under intense criticism, particularly since it was ejected from coalition government in 4493. Its most controversial stances on religion and nucelar weapons have generated a backlash from all other active parties in Hutori to the extent that the Nationals currently have no obvious allies. The party has also faced accusations of racism against immigrants and the native Mashcara community. Finally some regard the party as a populist outfit that has tailored its policies to maximise its vote base and hasn’t nurtured the ideological consistency of the more established parties in Hutori.
