During antiquity Selucia was dominated by independent city-states that also established numerous colonies on mainland Majatra and the southern coasts of Artania. These city-states were conquered by the Cildanian Hegemony (based on the Carthaginian Empire) after a series of wars, which would rule Selucia for centuries. After the collapse of the Hegemony Selucia returned to rule by independent city-states and small principalities. During late Antiquity Hosianism (Christianity) spread to Selucia, which would later become the religion's international headquarters. Between the 14th and 16th centuries Selucia was the center of the Renascentia (based on the Renaissance), a cultural period marked by the flourishing of the arts, architecture, literature, science, historiography, and political theory and a rebirth of the native Religio Seluciana (Roman Paganism). In the 18th century nationalist ideas gained hold, and in 1811 Selucia was unified for the first time in the aftermath of a revolution, establishing the Pagan-ruled First Republic (based on the Roman Republic). Unified Selucia would go on to establish one of Terra's largest colonial empires, ruling over nearly half of the continent of Seleya and with outposts on other continents and which resulted in the birth of Selucian-based creole languages (Romance languages). The Selucian Empire collapsed gradually due to wars of independence and conquest by other colonial empires, and in 1935 it was brought under the rule of Terra's first Fascist regime. Modern Selucia was founded in 2113 with the democratization of the former Fascist regime under an elective monarchy. During subsequent centuries formerly persecuted Hosianism regained its power and, after a long period of conflict and balance between Hosianism and Paganism, the former triumphed with the establishment of a Hosian theocracy in 3163. The theocratic regime was overthrown in 3838 establishing a modern republic with ideological influences from the First Republic. Selucia would remain a democratic republic for the following centuries, with brief but occasionally brutal interruptions from monarchist, theocratic, or fascist regimes. Ethnic groups: The dominant ethnic group in Selucia is the Selucians, based on Ancient Romans as well as various Romanized peoples. In addition to Selucians living on the islands since ancient times, this group also encompasses various people of mixed ethnic and cultural backgrounds, legacy of Selucian colonization, that primarily identify as Selucian. Selucians speak Selucian dialects (Vulgar Latin), while Modern Standard Selucian (Contemporary Latin) is the sole official language. Selucians are religiously divided between Hosianism, Paganism, and Irreligion. Selucia has large populations of Cildanians (Maltese), Majatrans (Arabs), Jelbics (Central Asians), Mallans (Ethiopians), Augustans (Byzantines) and Yeudis (Jews). Religions: The Aurorian Patriarchal Church, based on the Roman Catholic Church, is the largest denomination of Hosianism, a religion founded in 1 CE that believes Eliyahu of Yishelem to be the Spirit of God and Savior of mankind. The Aurorian Patriarchal Church is led by its Arch-Patriarch, located in the Selucian city of Auroria. Several other Hosian denominations are also practiced in the nation. Religio Seluciana, often known as Selucian Paganism, is a native polytheistic religion worshiping a pantheon of 27 main gods and numerous minor divinities and spirits and is based on Roman Polytheism. The Religio was expanded after the acceptance of Felinism as a valid expression of Selucian Paganism. Felinism is an animalistic religion born in Barmenistan in the 30th century and worshiping cats as divine beings. As a result of the acceptance of Felinism into Selucian Paganism, it essentially became a sect of Religio Seluciana. |
