Bill: Government Controlled Utilities
Details
Submitted by[?]: Civil Liberties Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: June 2364
Description[?]:
Seeking complete government control over all utilities, being that they are essential to a good standard of living in Likatonia and therefore should be provided by the government where prices can be kept reasonable and affordable by the means of the Convocation and not by privately owned corporations. The Convocation has already managed in the past to grant government control over all other utilities, except the nation's power stations, which is therefore the sole utility that this bill is concerned with. |

Message | This is a close call for us, as to us the key is that the government control at least some of the power generation, to ensure competition in what can be a monopolistic field, but as long as the government does own the retail utilities we feel the government should be the principal power producer. We would be willing to look in the future toward a more moderate across the board system, in which the state controls the power grid, but this change were repealed and local governments determined the regulation or control of power generation. However, as long as the state owns all utilities, it makes sense that we should be producing our own power, allowing small scale coops to opt out of the state-controlled system as this bill does. |

Message | Actually, this is now a strong yes rather than a weak yes, as we have just realized that there is currently no regulation of retail utilities whatsoever, and the government must control power generation to make certain that wholesale power is supplied in a way to force private companies to compete. |
