Bill: For the True Protection of Likatonia
Details
Submitted by[?]: AM Populist Social Democrats
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: November 2364
Description[?]:
Likatonia, we agree with others, must be prepared to defend itself. However, we do not believe that defense is best accomplished through the offensive, rather than defensive, use of WMD's. We therefore propose that a draft be conducted at all times, maintaining a standing army, that we grant a little more flexibility to the military in treatment of prisoners of war, and that we reserve the right to use nuclear weapons any time that we are the attacked rather than the attacker. |

Message | This is the wrong direction for us. A draft during times of war is understandable and can be arguably necessary, but to make it mandatory at all times and to force people to do something that unnecessarily obstructs their lives is too immense of a limit on individual freedoms. We see no reason why any of our citizens should have to serve at least one term. We would especially dislike to see our teachers, lawyers, doctors, scientists, and other jobs of the higher educated in our society serve a term in military defending our country when they can do just as important things off the battle field - mainly working in their specific fields and providing a better life for our citizens. Our military helps provide this better life as well, however, we have a large enough military as it is without forcing people to join and help their country a specific way when many of them are already helping Likatonia and its citizens in their own way. Let people choose the career paths they will, we should not force anyone to join the military if they would rather do something else. During times of war we can understand this right being taken away, but it should not be violated at all times. |

Message | The LFFR is torn on this issue, with some support in the de Kimberly faction, and some stronger support in the Kratz quarter. This is indeed embarrassing for de Kimberly to have been forced to vote along party lines against his own judgement. |

Message | We like the compulsary service - we like even better, the fact that concientious objectors can choose civilian service instead of military. We like the freedom to use our deterrent weapoms as a deterrent, although we find this position on the issue a little half-hearted. The only real bone of contention for us, would be the POW allowances. It is in our interests to treat other POW's as we would like our own soldiers to be handled. This clause to this legislation is a big handicap, and is going to hurt us internationally. Nonetheless, at this point - we are supporting - but we wish the record to clearly show our opposition to the Populist Party position on POWs'. |

Random fact: It is the collective responsibility of the players in a nation to ensure all currently binding RP laws are clearly outlined in an OOC reference bill in the "Bills under debate" section of the nation page. Confusion should not be created by displaying only some of the current RP laws or displaying RP laws which are no longer current. |
