MessageDunno if this would be possible, or practical. It would drive prices up and criminals could still import guns or take the mechanism off the gun. Or steal the guns from law-abiding citizens framing them for the crime. I dont think it would work.

MessageThere are similar mechanisms already available, I believe it's called gun DNA. Of course there are exploits in the system, but there are even more gaping ones in the current one where the only match involves barrel markings which can be defeated with a simple file. As for gun stealing, citizens should be accountable for their guns at all times and report them if they're stolen in the first place, it's their responsibility for having a firearm.

MessageGun DNA basically registers bullets with a database, as I understand it. If a bullet is found at the crime scene it is tested against the database. Although this would keep a catalog of munition owners, it wouldn't catalog firearms. This is only one system, however.

MessageYeah, this seems pointless as far as stopping gun crimes

MessageMmm hmm, so you would prefer there be nothing in place in order to tell where the bullet used in a crime came from? Granted, I know it's not going to solve all crimes committed but it would give inspectors more to go on.

MessageI am simply sceptical as to whether this system would work, although I support your efforts to create a solution. Wouldnt the bullet be destroyed in the shooting?

MessageIf that was the case, then barrel-mark analysis would be pretty pointless. Bullets marked with markers are usually identifiable after they are fired, and I see no reason why a more comprehesive system wouldn't be even more effective.
