Bill: Axis Mundi - Is this what we want?

Details

Submitted by[?]: Likaton Coalition of the Willing

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This bill asks for an amendement to the Constitution. It will require two-thirds of the legislature to vote in favor. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: September 2366

Description[?]:

Following discussions and debate prior to the recent election, it is felt within the LITP that we may have misjudged the mood, and that the Government and the people that are represented may in fact welcome Axis Mundi, even if political affiliations seem otherwise.

We hereby propose that the nation be re-named, from 'Free Republic of Likatonia', to 'Axis Mundi Likatonian Res Publica'

Additionally, we look to amend the motto as per the suggestion made by the AMR!

MessageWhilst we are unhappy with this Bill, if it receives support from more than 50% of the Convocation, we will vote aye. We will put this to the vote as soon as we feel there is consensus, or by the end of 2365 at the latest.

MessageThis is a somewhat surprising gesture of goodwill from the LITP. We aren't sure about putting both articles in the same bill, since it means the two ideas stand and fail on a 'bargain' basis, rather than judged on their individual merits... but we appreciate the spirit in which this gesture was made.

We vote 'aye'.

MessageMostly OOC:

We firmly support the motto change.

However, although we are AM members, we cannot support this name change. I look ahead to a time when the nation will not be "full," even if that is months from now, and people would be reluctant to join as they would at first glance think the nation's business is not conducted in English or something.

We aren't really sure what "Axis Mundi" means. We joined it without a suggestion being made, seeing just that it was an organization of cooperation among members that had no ideological constraints on its members, and that it had a large Likatonian base.

Thus, we don't know if Mundi used alone even makes sense (but we want an English name and prefer not to have "Axis," implying aggressive militarism even though its organizational meaning is not as such, in its name), but ideally we would support "Mundi Republic of Likatonia," or "Mundi Democratic Republic of Likatonia," or something similar, unless Mundi used alone did not make sense.

MessageMundi alone doesn't really make sense.

"Axis Mundi" would literally mean 'world alliance' (Axis = alliance, mundi = world). This is the irritating and amusing thing about groups calling themselves things like "Axis Alliance"... the concept is redundant.

The Axis Mundi organisation is a 'world alliance' - a non-partisan collection of parties from accross the world, with no restrictions on political ideology or geography. (OOC: It was originally designed as a role-play tool for dealing with 'problem' situations like the Deltarian war of conquest, which have no real 'in character' way to be resolved).

Likatonia has been called the "Axis Mundi Republic of Likatonia" before - for quite a long time. (OOC: Dropping out of character again, I'm not worried either way about the name change - it's just the sort of thing the Axis Mundi Revolution does).

MessageWe shall vote no, for reasons stated above. However, if a bill proposed the motto change alone, we would vote yes.
