Bill: IP Foreign Policy Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Imperialist Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: March 2380

Description[?]:

1. Embassies become the sovereign soil of a foreign country and, by convention, we offer diplomatic immunity to foreign ambassadors. Given this state of affairs, I believe it necessary that - to address extreme cases - we reserve the right to disallow some embassies. This can be an effective way of showing displeasure for foreign human rights practices, or a way of reprimanding those that abuse diplomatic immunity.

2. As much as we benefit from new immigrants to this land, not all immigrants are equal. For instance, is it in our interest to allow grandparents into this country, and to collect from our pension system? What about criminals, rabble-rousers and ne'er-do-wells? With good criteria we can obtain the maximum benefit for Telamon, and better integrate new arrivals into our society.

3. Trade with other countries benefits both themselves and us. We ought to use aid as a means of obtaining mutually beneficial arrangements with other countries - both serving humanitarian purposes, and enhancing the national interest.

4. Refugees are expensive, so it only makes sense to focus on those that are truly in need. The treasury is limited, while human misery is not. By focusing on people that truly need our help, we can do the most good. At any rate, if this bill passes, we will have requirements for immigrants. If our refugee system is lax (as it is now), rejected applicants can just apply as refugees. So not changing refugee policy will create a loophole, if we change immigration policy.
