MessageIt is a mystery to us as to why the ILP does not support this proposal. We feel that it improves democracy and upholds the ideals of freedom for everyone. In this way, non-majority parties will have a voice in how the government is run. What is the problem?

MessageWe consider it the role of the Head of Government/State to propose cabinets, not that of the minority parties. We believe this will simply produce large numbers of coalitions dominated by minority parties whose influence will not reflect the faith the Electorate has put in them.

MessageLabor notes that at present, the President is a member of one of those minority parties. Surely the faith the electorate has in a party, as opposed to an individual presidential candidate, is reflected in the number of seats the electorate grants that party as a whole, not in whether they endorse one individual or not. The President is much more popular than her party - this explains her success in the presidential elections despite her party's fairly mediocre parliamentary result.

MessageThe electorate also directly elects the president. If the electorate, being, one would hope, cognizant of the president's current powers, wish to force the president into coalition, who are you, or for that matter, we, to object?

MessagePerhaps a compromise might be limiting the right to propose a cabinet to the President and the leader of the party possessing a plurality in Parliament but to no other parties?

MessageLabor notes the ILP's objection as spurious, since the issue of the president's powers has never been put to the public, only the issue of who should fill the office of president as it currently exists. Whether the people are cognizant of the president's current powers are not is entirely irrelevant if they have not had a chance to consider whether it is appropriate for the president to have those powers or not.

Message*Excellent!* We are glad the Deltarian Labour Party proposes this referendum, putting the issue of the President's powers fo the people. We propose that this bill be dropped immediately, and that a referendum be carried out.

(Oh wait...)

MessageBy putting this on the agenda of the parliament, the people will be able to express their will on the issue by considering it amongst the other issues which will influence them at the ballot box. It is as much a test of the democratic will of the people as is any other bill placed before the Deltarian parliament.

On the other hand, if it were actually possible for the direct referendums to be carried out on constitutional changes, Labor would support such a referendum over bills like this.

MessageThe Liberal Democrats will now move this bill to vote.

When deciding, we encourage parties to consider deeply the power of democracy, and as such, we encourage all parties to support fairness in Parliament and in the nation as a whole.
