Bill: GM Policy

Details

Submitted by[?]: Rationalist Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: December 2087

Description[?]:

This bill adresses the illogical state of affairs currently in place in our nation, labeling accurately is impossible (there are no test to prove something is GM), there is no defined acceptable level of "contamination" of non-GM products, and labeling will only increase costs to industry.

MessageNo, I think people have the right to know exactly what is in their food.

MessageHow much is allowed with no label then?
What processes can remove the GM label? (eg oil extraction and use)
At what stage of production is testing done?
How are you to test for GM products?

MessagePutting a few extra words on a label that is already on a product is not going to increase costs.

A company should know what is being used in their food.

I dont know how to verify it. I'm sure there is a way. Maybe if you provided me with a source that says its not possible I would change my mind.

MessageThe cost increase is not due to the printing, it comes from duplication (need two processes for nonGM and GM).
Agreed that a company should know what is in their food, but what about cross pollination? That would make the plant a second generation GMO.
As for the source saying that it can't be done reliably, the one that I am using I do not have here, but it is by a U Sask. professor of botany, who has four GM patents to his name. I don't know when I will be back there next, but the info is at my parents' house.
You still haven't addressed my first three questions.

MessageWe should not be required to show GM products. Besides, it is IMPOSSIBLE to determine a GM crop amidst a batch of organic crops. Most domesticated crops are to0 genetically different from each other to establish a non-GM crop's identity. GM crops are not tomatoes mixed with fish, they are crops with a higher protein yield caused by genetic engineering whil domesticated crops are crops with a higher protein yield caused by selective breeding. Personally, I would be more scared by all-natural crops as any amount of defects get through in domestication. Look at the africanized killer bee.

MessageOk then. I'll go along with it.

And Rationalist. I didnt answer the first 3 questions because I didnt understand what you were asking.

But I'm going along so it doesnt really matter now.

MessageOh, then sorry.
Even though you'll support I will answer the questions for clarity, and because now that I read them, I see they weren't well worded.
1) How much GM product would be allowed in a non-labled good? (ppm or %)
2) Are there any products that do not need a label due to a lack of DNA in the end product?

And I don't remember what was so important about the third...
