| Message | Closed shop unions are necessary if workers are to exercise their COLLECTIVE right to strike. If union membership is voluntary, then employers can hire scabs, or otherwise adopt a divide and conquer strategy - harmful to the workers. Secondly this act seeks to organize unions, not by industry or profession, but by country. With one union, strikes will only happen when a strike would be in the interest of all workers - since union leaders would trade off the interests of say, steel-workers against dock-workers. When unions are compartmentalized, on the other hand, steelworkers have no incentive to consider the effects of their actions on other industries - apart from the inherent fraternity among members of the proletariat that the Marxists have told me so much about. |
