MessageWe thank the VBD for removing this article from the previous Religion bill.

If one were to really encourage religious freedom in public schools, one should agree that keeping teachers from leading prayers is the best way to do this. Young children are impressionable, and often follow the lead of their teachers. If there is any chance that individual schools would allow prayer, that might counteract the idea behind the proposal.

Religious schools have the right to offer prayers, as that is a central belief in what they teach and often a reason parents would choose to send their children to such schools. But for the majority of families which have children in public schools, the best way to teach about religion would be at home with the parents and not by teachers.

We at the FB74 are willing to listen to all sides of the debate, but at this time are leaning against voting for this specific proposal.

MessageThe VBD thinks that this measurement will encourage public schools to compete. This might sound a bit odd but it's to our believe that schools have to "fight" to get pupils/students. This means they have to offer all sorts of programs in order to interest parents and students. Schools will offer more individual tuituin for instance in order to differ from other schools. Parents can choose to which school they are sending their kids. Teacher-led prayers might be one of those 'unique selling points' but it's up to the consumer to decide.

MessageFor families which are not religious, or wish to make their own decisions regarding religion for their children, public schools can sell themselves with a content-based curriculum that centers on key subjects (math, reading, social studies, sciences).

If we encourage college and university students to enter teacher training programs and then get them to work in public schools, parents will know that the highest selling point of public schools will be the valuable academic training their children will receive. There will be no doubt about the quality of content-based education in public schools.

MessageWe might consider to publish the exam results of every school by a neutral organization. That makes it all quite transparant and increases the chance to make the right choice of school. Besides, these teacher-led prayers are only taken place at the start of every schoolday, so to us no big deal.

MessageWe thank the VBD for their two recent religion reform bills. While the FB74 voted in the affirmative on part 1, we are going to have to vote no on part 2 (this particular bill).
