Bill: IP Telamonian Values Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Imperialist Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: September 2413
Description[?]:
This act will, if passed, ban prostitution, though I could be persuaded to legalize it. The status quo is the worst of all possible options, however. Leaving it up to the local government has many problems - they often lack the resources to deal with the situation, and also, prostitutes and pimps can simply move across the border - this doesn't prevent women from being trapped at all. Localities that want to ban prostitution, can't effectively ban it because of this factor - we need a nationwide policy for or against (and I prefer against). Lets end the objectification and commodification of women. |

Message | Prostitution is a natural business which reflects an inevitiable part of our economy. If prostitution is illegalised, you deny this government revenue, which as you know, is in dire need. In addition, legalised prostitution allows women the right to persue whatever career they wish and be given government protection over their career choices. Local governments have the resources to deal with this, and we respect the wishes of various cantons to deal with the issue however they feel fit. We cannot provide a blanket law over such a derisive issue between several cantons. |

Message | That is a lame argument. We can tax whatever the heck we want to. Further, I would argue that prostitution is rarely if ever a choice - it is a situation forced upon desperate women, usually with drug problems. The problem with leaving it up to Cantons is that if it is legal in one canton, it is legal in all cantons - de facto - because pimps and prostitutes will simply go to the one where it is legal. We need a clear law - either ban it or legalize it, but this middle path is nuts. (ooc: and men, your average crack whore is frankly, not very good-looking. I grew up near the bad part of town - the prostitutes were easily the least attractive people there, most looking 60, though they were 30). |

Message | How can we tax a business that is not recognised by our government? That is what legalisation does. These simplifications and generalisations only reflect your government's misconception of prostitution which can be a job of choice, and a lucrative one at that. Local governments should have the power to decide whatever they wish to reflect the divergent views of our populace. Surely even you understand these simple facts. |

Message | Okay, here is the ridiculous basis of the "we can tax it" argument. The government can tax whatever the hell it wants to - its the government. Prostitution does not create new income that can now be taxed. Rather it is an avenue of consumption, that governments can tax if they want. But if you legalize prostitution, you are accepting that it is not a social ill. If prostitution is not a social ill then why tax it, as opposed to say, the number of flowers people have in a garden. The only reason prostitution is particularly taxable is because like drinking, drugs and smoking, many people find it morally repugnant. |

Random fact: Party candidates for head of state elections are not visible to the public. This means that you cannot see who will run and who will not, which adds another strategic element to the elections. |
