Message | Mr Speaker, I introduce this bill for the consideration of the Imperial Diet assembled. Unfortunately we do not have time for debate as I must request that you allow this to go straight to the vote, Mister Speaker, otherwise elections will still go ahead in March 2428, setting back the legislative agenda by some fifteen months. I request the the division bell be struck at once and yield the floor. |

Message | OOC: Nearly forgot the OOC explanation there. The early elections I called last Friday, hoping for them to go ahead sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning were triggered on Friday afternoon. As such elections will keep going ahead just before the weekend. Calling early elections immiediately after them is never popular with the parties who did well, or with the electorate (it usually results in low turnout). As such I believe a better system would be to have five year maximum term then call elections when appropriate (either weekends or when parties disappear, reappear, &c), rather than try to match the duration to a RL week. I hope everyone agrees (I'm doing this while in opposition as I know what people would think if I proposed this while in government!) |

Message | Mr. Speaker, This will decrease activity among parties and cause more frequent use of "Calls for Early Elections." Furthermore it is highly discouraging to parties that lack seats. It is necessary for the people to be able review the work of the parties ever 42 months. In fact I would propose it to be even less than 42. Yield |

Message | Mr Speaker, Of course it will cause more frequent use of the ability of this Diet to dissolve itself and call for elections: didn't I explain that was the idea? I yield the floor. OOC: Having Diets of less than four years was only brought about because it's a RL week - having electoral cycles of less than four years would cripple any government, especially when bills take a minimum of eight months to become law. |

Message | Mr. Speaker, I sympathise with the noble motives behind what the Veterans are proposing, but still feel that elections every 60 months isn't frequent enough. Parties need to be held to account by the electorate at regular intervals. 42 months is about right. I yield the floor. Belinda Braithwaite (Viceroy & Leader of the LCWA) |

Message | OOC: We agree with you Belinda - that's why we propose that elections are called every weekend. What increasing the maximum period does is prevent an early election (i.e. Friday afternoon) from repeating every week. Should I have gone for 48 months instead? |
