| The Democratic Rationalists are adamantly pro-choice. We believe that a woman's body is her body, and that she should hold primacy over decisions affecting her body. That being said, we believe there is a competing, valid interest in preventing needless human suffering, and preserving the sanctity of human life. We believe it is tragic, immoral, and unbefitting the great nation of Aloria that under present abortion policy, a baby may be aborted one day before birth, but magically obtains legal protection one day after birth. In fact, there is no substantial difference between a baby one day before birth, and one day after birth, to warrant such a radical change of policy simply because the baby exists inside the womb one day, and outside the womb the next day. Current science tells us that a developing human develops the capacity to suffer at some point between the end of the first trimester, and the beginning of the second trimester. At that time, roughly, the developing human has sufficient neural activity, and nerve receptors, that it can experience pain. Therefore, 1) To prevent needless human suffering, and 2) To preserve the sanctity of human life, The Democratic Rationalists propose to permit abortions only during the first trimester, except in cases of medical need for the mother. However, the Democratic Rationalists are open to compromise. If, in the judgement of Aloria's other fair political parties, the right to abortion is so important to warrant it, we would be willing to accept a bill to permit abortions only until the end of the second trimester. But please, let's end the practice of last-minute abortions. |
