Message | Why sue? They're just words! |

Message | Tried this before. It lost. Tried it again, it lost. The MLP believe that this opens the door to eventual freedom of speech violations and will therefore vote NO (as we tend to do a lot!). |

Message | "Just words" can damage or destroy reputations. What if a parent who feels maligned by his child's low grade spreads malicious false rumors that the teacher is a pedophile, and the teacher is harassed in the community, or even forced to resign? What if a jilted girl falsely accuses a young man of rape, and he finds himself unjustly shunned on campus? We'd like to believe people can be trusted to take gossip with a grain of salt. Unfortunately, they don't always. When malicious falsehoods ruin someone innocent, they should be able to gain vindication in court, and compensation for their trouble. And, CP, my sense is that you're a reader of the Bible. Doesn't it command "thou shalt not bear false witness?" |
