Bill: Just Say NO....to a Medicine SHORTAGE Act!!!

Details

Submitted by[?]: Capitalist Working Families

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: December 2441

Description[?]:

While maintaining the current sound gov't policy of subsidizing R&D (research and development) to foster innovation of new prescription drugs, it simply says that it is NOT in the Government's job to regulate or dictate the price of those drugs. The people have already spoken and they OUSTED the Socialists out of power.

According to Economics 101, if the Gov't dictates the price of anything that is below the equilibrium price of the market, a SHORTAGE of prescription medicine would arise thus causing RATIONING. Therefore, when you vote "yes" for this bill, do it not for me, but for CAPITALISM!!!

Thank you for your full support!!!

MessageWe believe that unregulating medicine prices would cause unscrupulous yet vital drug manufacturers to charge exorbitant prices. Citizens would no longer be able to afford life-saving medication, leading to their death. Because of the extremely specialized nature of certain medicines, the manufacturers have a monopoly on their production and sale.

No, you are MISUNDERSTANDING basic economics. If Pfizer drug company and Zocor drug company both manufacture the same drug, that COMPETITION between the two for higher profits would lead to a DOWNWARD pressure on prices naturally.

However, if the Gov't dictates the price of medicine, it would eventually lead to RATIONING of medicines via a shortage.

This bill is amended to speed up the production of GENERIC drugs to the market.

Thank you again for your full support!!!

MessageNo, you are misunderstanding corporate law. Two drugs companies will never compete like this as one will own a patent on the drug. Until the patent runs out, they have a monopoly on selling the drug and so the prices must be regulated. After the patent expires, if the drug is still the best on the market then more companies will produce (usually cheaper) variants. Hence your Bill is completely un-needed and in will only do damage.

Btw, sorry about the double post. Anyway, ok I will concede to your argument that the drug company can yield a monopoly over the patent. Regardless, however, if the heavy bureaucratic arm of government DICTATES the price of those drugs below the MARKET (equilibrium) rate, it will cause a SHORTAGE of the much needed medicines of the people. In turn, that will cause RATIONING!!!

Nevertheless, poor and middle class families could still be able to afford these expensive drugs b/c:

(1) the competition of GENERIC drugs to the market;

(2) Check the currently enacted laws of the Commonwealth. Rutania has STRONG labor laws and protections for workers' rights of which OUR party---along with a coalition with the Militarist and Neo-whigs---helped put in place. If workers are in a union, they can get a comprehensive healthcare plan which would absorb the cost of the prescription drugs;

(3) The Commonwealth currently subsidies the cost of prescription drugs for the elderly and the poor;

Thanks again.
