Bill: Equality in Education

Details

Submitted by[?]: Democratic Labour Union

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: February 2453

Description[?]:

United Jakania is certainly a nation in which individual liberty is valued and long may it remain so. However, looking at our current education policy one cannot help but ask whether children who are kept out of education despite our best efforts to make it available are being disenfranchised by the choices of their parents.

A well educated citizen by far will be the most productive citizen and most importantly able to make informed decision for themselves and something we as legislators should most certainly encourage. After all we all hope that our children of today will be the leaders of tomorrow once we, the encumbant, decide to take advantage of wonderful state pension scheme.

There is not greater duty we are charged with than the individual growth of our youngest citizens and as such the DLU humbly implore our esteemed colleagues to vote in favour of this bill.

Sincerely
Gale Osmond
DLU Opposition speaker for Education and Culture

MessageIf I may make a note with regard to Article II. If we should change the law and leave Article II at 18 it would certainly keep citizens in education longer, however the age at which someone is regarded as an adult is 16 in our great nation and as such we could not force an adult who should be making decisions for themselves, to remain in education. This would in our view be an unacceptable infringement on adults individual right to self determination.

To rectify this we can see only two alternatives, either bring the compulsory education limit in line with the legal adult age of 16 or raise the adult age to 18. We have opted for the first as the second would certainly be a larger debate and thus detract from the main emphasis of this bill.

MessageI support one, do not support two(regarding what you said, I hate that the adult age is 16, I'd prefer it to be 18, even 21, I can just never get a bill changing that to pass)

However, seeing as how article one is far more important, the party shall debate amongst itself whether or not to support

MessageThe PSP reckons the necessity of this bill. A good educated population is the foundation of a democracy. We support.

MessageThe DLU is most gratified the SDF is in agreement with the spirit of the bill and we understand their reservations with regard to Article II. We would however respectfully request Article II to be viewed as a minor legislative point as not to scuttle the aim of the bill as a whole.

Most sincerely

MessageAs I said, it is a rather minor point, we will probably support, but cannot say for sure at this point
