| Message | With all due respect to my colleagues in the SSD, I'm afraid I'll have to disagree. While indeed a minimum wage does make it more expensive to hire workers, it also places more money in the hands of would-be consumers, and it soon becomes a matter of economies of scale. While it may indeed raise inflation, correct administration of interest rates ensures that the inflation rate does not get out of hand, and certain amounts of inflation are necessary, otherwise they indicate an inactive, zero-growth economy. As for your unemployment rate argument...given that Malivia already has a minimum wage, how can we increase the unemployment rate by maintaining that wage? Would it not, in fact, be more sensible to maintain that wage, in order to ensure that workers stay in our economy or, better yet, are tempted to travel to us? Rather than increasing the unemployment rate, I think you'll find that by offering a lucrative minimum wage, the Republic can, in fact, lure more workers here, and lower unemployment. It may indeed be more expensive for business in the short term, but as more workers are hired, producing more goods (which are in turn bought by the consumers, who have more wealth as a result of greater employment, and a guaranteed base wage), I think you'll find that in the long-term, everyone wins out. Inflation is an important, but unavoidable by-product of economic growth, arguing that a minimum wage promotes it is a weak case, you may as well argue that a shrinking economy is the best kind of all. |
