MessageWell I would assume so, unregulated space exploration sounds good to citizens. But, they don't have the responsibility of forseeing and counteracting military concerns.

MessageOur own space program allows for our own GPS system. It also allows for a an increased number of research projects (government funded maybe) that can only be done in outer space (due to gravity fields and radiation emissions).
One research issue in particular comes to mind, space seeds. Vegetable and plant seeds that have been taken into outerspace and returned (which exposes it to certain radiations) have produced huge specimens that have, so far, seemed safe for human consumption.
A question, while I am not sure of the current trends, wasn't there a movement wanting to switch from air flight to suborbital flights a decade or two ago?

Random quote: "I worked at a factory owned by Germans, at coal pits owned by Frenchmen, and at a chemical plant owned by Belgians. There I discovered something about capitalists. They are all alike, whatever the nationality. All they wanted from me was the most work for the least money that kept me alive. So I became a communist." - Nikita Khrushchev
