Bill: Introducing Free Contraceptives

Details

Submitted by[?]: Democratic Socialist Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: August 2100

Description[?]:

We propose the government places free contraceptives in all pharmacies and public toilets. Making contraceptives free and available in a wide range of places means people see whats available, and almost certainly increases their use. This decreases the spread of STDs such as AIDS and HIV, and decreases the infant mortality rate. This will then have a positive impact in healthcare, as they have to treat less people, and will have a positive impact across society in general.

MessageWe oppose this bill. We see no evidence that access to contraceptives is presently an issue, and as such we cannot support increasing public and spending and increasing big government on addressing something that is not, actually, a problem.

MessageIntroducing free contraceptives into any country will lower the IMR and the spread of STDs, however high or low they were before, because people will be practicing safe sex more often. It can be shown, time and time again, that it does help. Why do you think they're pushing so hard for it in many parts of Africa? And while we admit it isn't as big a problem as it is there, it IS a problem. It's a problem for every country across the world. If either of these figures are about 0 its a problem, and something needs to be done. We know this will not reduce either to zero, but we feel it will have a significant impact, certianly enough to make it worthwhile.

MessageFind me some figures showing that the cost of offering free contraceptives is lower than the cost of the unwanted pregnancies and STDs avoided in Trigunia, and I'll vote yes. Until then, we have to vote no.

MessageOOC: How am I supposed to do that, given that there are no figures, either on the cost of unwanted pregnancies, infant mortality, the spread of STDs, or bringing this bill into effect in Trigunia?

If we are to assume that Trigunia is similar to the USA, which isn't too unreasonable we think, then the cost of infant mortality, abortions and the spread of STDs is incredibly large, and it would be far cheaper to pay for this bill. And thats just the finacial costs, the social benefits of this bill have to be considered too, and are also very large. It massively raises the standard of living, especially for the poor, and will benefit the country massively.

MessageDSP is correct it's cheaper to pass the bill, then to pay for the treatment of STDs and other costs.

MessageDSP, LDP, we are willing to be persuaded that this bill has merit, but we will need firmer evidence than a vague assertion that "DSP is correct it's cheaper to pass the bill, then to pay for the treatment of STDs and other costs".
