Bill: Abolition of Death Penalty
Details
Submitted by[?]: Liberty Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: September 2105
Description[?]:
We believe that the fundamental irreversibility of the death penalty, combined with the inevitability of human error and corruption means that we cannot have absolute certainty in an individual's guilt, we cannot permanently deprive him of his life. Or, as Amnesty International puts it, "The death penalty legitimizes an irreversible act of violence by the state and will inevitably claim innocent victims. Since human justice is fallible, the risk of executing the innocent will never be eliminated." |

Old value:: The death penalty is not applied, except for terrorism, treason and crimes against mankind.

Proposed: The death penalty is illegal and is never to be applied.

Message | Disagree. The right to use the death penalty should be reserved for extreme cases which warrant it. |

Message | Well, if you can guarantee that no innocent person has or ever will be executed, then we will reconsider. |

Message | How can you guarantee that no innocent will be accidentally executed? You can't even guarantee that no innocent will be accidentally incarcerated. So do you propose that no criminal face incarceration? It's absurd. |

Message | Imperialist Party - that is precisely our point. As long as their is the risk of the state executing innocent people, there can be no place for it in a civilized society. We agree that innocent people are incarcerated, but at least they have the prospect of appeal, there is no appeal from death. |

Message | Sorry, typo, it should read "As long as THERE is the risk of the state executing people". (slaps own forehead) Idiot. |
