Message | the other current prison law states prisoners have access to education while in prison. a fat lot of good that does them if they just spent 16 hours on a chain gang. those voted for education prison thought this was going to occur when? apparently it was just wishful thinking without any thought as to when a prisoner might actually have time to stop being the object of retribution and start being the object of rehabilitation. |

Message | Perhaps you should learn about the aims of punishment before bandying around words like retribution and rehabilitation. In no way is the current law retributive. In no way is the proposed law rehabilitive. The only thing this law affects, is whether prisoners should contribute something to society while in prison, that is, whether a prison sentence should have a restitutive flavour, or whether they should be in their cells doing nothing, that is, whether such a sentence should purely be for incapacitation. We, and any sensible person, would suggest the former. |

Message | You're partly right, the current law does not say chain gangs isn't possible, but the current law does not say prisoners have to work in a chain gaing for 16 hours a day either. We believe prison management and the department of Justice are responsible and experienced enough to form a decent and well thought out policy on prison labour |

Message | the JUP apparently has never heard of a chain gang and the GLDS just wish the potential problem would go away. oh well. |

Message | All I want to say is you're making all sorts of possible assumptions, like for example this "16 hours on a chain gang" thing. Although indeed nothing in this law specifically forbids this, nothing actually says your assumptions are true. The bills simply says: "Able-bodied prisoners have to work during the day". And while it does not mention chain gangs, or the specific activities a convict can or can't perform, and while it does not go into specific matters concerning the exact number of hours a prisoner has to work, or the designated lunch times, the possibility of overtime or weekend work,.. etc, etc, etc... we believe this law to be quite sufficient. Sorry if not every possible detail is covered, but that's just how the bill-proposal-system works. However, we'ld be happy to support a resolution that would deal with your chain-gang concerns. |
