Bill: School Discipline Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Progressive Liberal Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: May 2107

Description[?]:

Currently schools are permitted to dictate their own policy regarding the use of physical discipline. We believe that this is tantamount to the government of the Republic of Aldegar supporting child abuse. As such we propose that teachers are forbidden from striking children and may only use non-contact discipline (detention, expulsion etc).

MessageWe believe physical chastisement, used appropriately - and never out of anger or frustration - can sometimes be useful in child behaviour policy. Teachers and parents have many strategies for dealing with behaviour problem - some of which involve physical punishment, some which don't. They can all work in the right circumstances, applied with love, care, sensitive and consistency.

MessageWhilst we agree physical discipline is sometimes required in order to appropriately deal with children's behaviour, we believe promoting parental responsibility for these matters is more benefitial to the children and society at large. The current legislative situation allows for the abuse of children without cause. It is an unfortunate situation in that it doesn't take many bad apples to spoil a bunch, and whilst we think that most teachers would use such powers appropriately, the ill effects of abuse by just a small section of teachers could have devastating consequences. The Neo-Progressive Party wishes to foster a learning environment in which all students feel secure and furthermore, have the opportunity to learn.

MessageAgain we vote on this, and again we vote for. We do not believe how violence is ever the answer, and how it ever solves anything, or does anything except teach children that violence is the answer. If you can't control a pupil without using violence, you shouldn't be teaching. In fact, if you strike children, you shouldn't be teaching.
