MessageSince I know I am the swing vote on this one, convince me why I should say yes. I do support renewable resources not only as an economist but also because its environmentally sound. My only concern is with giving government subsidies because I don't mind doing so but that lost revenue has to come from somewhere or some other government program. Do these companies need the financial incentive because the startup costs and technology is so extremely high? Does the government save money in the long long run and I guess how long? Also, I would be willing to increase taxes a little if it funds the lost revenue or where shall we cut?

MessageShort-sightedness is the very problem that hinders environmentalism--so is the plague of denial and an inherent refusal to alter our present habits of living. Isn't the preservation of our environment enough reason to invest in cleaner methods of living? This applies to health as well. We tend to neglect "preventative" means of operating, in our bodies as well as our environment. We only wait until something goes terribly wrong to seek intervention--and usually by then consequences are irreversible. And by then we pay more in the long run in terms of $, time, and effort in the process of recovery and repeated offenses to our optimal health and environment. The goal of healthy harmony is more than enough reason to invest in the present.

And as always...I implore, "Think of the children!!"

MessageThe start up costs for renewable energy companies is high. Not only does it take a lot of resources to harvest adequet amounts of energy from renewable sources (or to construct the facilities -- such as biofuels), but these companies then have to compete against feul companies who alreeady have established industries.

Several different benefits can be reaped from investing in renewable energy sources. We reduce dependancy on foreign imports (Egelion isn't a big oil or coal producer, right?) which keeps fund in country and increases national security and defense. Additional energy industry promotes jobs. Several areas of renewable energy research promote research in other fields (marine biology, genetics, zoology, physics, etc.).

However, since the game's budget doesn't work or calculate anything with these subsidies -- there is no reason to raise taxes. Leave the funding of this to the Science Ministry. The last time, all the projects proposed by the ministry also acted as sources of governmental revenue. Or, in the case of the farms, were practically necessities for ensuring public safety. A deal could be worked out.

MessageOOC: about the oil thing... since Egelion is a fairly norther country, it could have extensive oil reserves much like Norway, or Canada... or Russia. The only thing we have to do is agree on this issue.

Random fact: All role-play must respect the established cultural background in Culturally Protected nations.

Random quote: “The people's war isn't just a war of destruction, it is also a war of construction. We will build new facilities, new hospitals, new farms. We will seek to improve the lives of the people around us. This struggle will be as costly as the struggle against the bourgeois army, and indeed will be even more damaging to the enemy.” - Comrade X, former Hulstrian politician
