Bill: Controlled Substances Decriminalisation Act 2107
Details
Submitted by[?]: Progressive Liberal Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: January 2109
Description[?]:
The Bill proposes to decriminalise naturally occuring drugs, signifying a significant shift from the current situation whereby recreational drugs are prohibited. The NPP supports the rights of individuals to act autonomously and responsibily in relation to their own recreational drug use. We also believe it is hypocritical to allow tobacco smoking, whilst outlawing the use of substances such as cannabis and hallucinogenic mushrooms. We understand that this will be contentious legislation, and as such, we will leave it open to debate for an extended period of time. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change The recreational drug policy.
Old value:: Recreational drug use is forbidden.
Current: There are no laws regulating what citizens can put into their bodies.
Proposed: All naturally occurring drugs are legal.

Message | The Democratic Alliance will not support this proposal under any circumstances. Drugs are ruining people's lives, and legalisation would increase their grip one hundred fold. Nobody should be taken in, either, by the mantra of 'naturally occuring'. The unfortunate Mr. Frederick Templeton, who was much beloved by many Aldegarians, found out all too tragically for himself what the consequences of abusing these 'naturally occuring' drugs are. Drugs can afflict anyone - no matter their social background or position in society. This kind of blanket legalisation is not the answer. |

Message | Perhaps the leadership of the Progressive Liberal Party has had their judgement clouded by the use of these naturally occuring drugs. This is an unthinkably bad proposal which Novy Smer could never support. Naturally occuring drugs could include morphine, cocaine, heroin, cannabis, arsenic and ergot alkaloids, not to mention the ensuing declassification of hundreds of dangerous drugs used in medicine which require strict controls to protect the public. Are we to make anticancer drugs such as taxol and vincristine available off prescription just because they are 'naturally occuring'? Any bill to legalise the abuse of dangerous poisons such as cocaine is simply insane. |

Message | We contest the assertion that heroin and cocaine are naturally occuring. It is our belief that these are drugs which have been significantly refined from substances that are naturally occuring. Then hypocracy of allowing tobacco smoking, which contains innumerable carcinogens whilst not allowing cannabis which debatably has far fewer health implications. Opposing this legislation is an insult to liberty and the intelligence of all citizens of Aldegar who we believe have a fundamental right to control what enters their bodies, not the government. |

Message | *edit* The hypocracy of allowing tobacco smoking, which contains innumerable carcinogens whilst not allowing cannabis which debatably has far fewer health implications is barely believable. |

Message | Cocaine is from the leaves of the cocoa plant and heroin is a product of the opium poppy. Trust me, this is the area I work in and I am a specialist. I would support the banning of smoking tobacco too, but the health risks from tobacco are relatively moderate in comparison to cannabis and halucinogens. |

Message | We are aware of where these drug comes from. You're right, however, when you say that these are the PRODUCTS of the cocoa plant and the opium poppy. They are however, not 'naturally occuring' by our definition (and would therefore not be legalised) as they require significant refining before becoming cocaine or heroin, as opposed to 'magic' mushrooms or cannabis which can be consumed without any modification. We believe there is a misunderstanding here relating to the definition of 'naturally occuring'. |

Message | We realise there is very little support for this Bill, but we feel compelled to at least try to maximise the rights of the citizens of Aldegar and thus hope (in vain no doubt) that this will pass. |
Date | 18:26:06, September 09, 2005 CET | From | Ducal Delegation | To | Debating the Controlled Substances Decriminalisation Act 2107 |
Message | The Democratic Alliance is pleased to have the opportunity to place its opposition to this irresponsible Act on the record. The public will judge each party's vote on this matter accordingly. |
Date | 13:42:57, September 10, 2005 CET | From | Communist Party of Aldegar | To | Debating the Controlled Substances Decriminalisation Act 2107 |
Message | Although we have no seats, we can and will make our voice heard. On the issue of naturally-occuring drugs, we advocate legalisation. This way the drug dealers lose, and the Government could still regulate the use of these drugs. |
