Message | Religions aren't taxed. Religious institutions are taxed on their profit only. You're not doing very well at being a secular party. |

Message | The problem though JUP is that taxing religious institutions has the appearance of religions being taxed. |

Message | Let's say we have two organisations. One is a homeless shelter run by a local church, the other is a homeless shelter run by a group of volunteers. Both need funding to run, and so they receive donations from ordinary citizens. Under the current law, this money is not taxed, as donations to charities are not taxed. Both organisations decide that they should use some of this money to do further fundraising, by selling some food to members of the public at a slight markup. This way they can use the profit to provide for more homeless people. Under the current law, both organisations pay the standard corporate tax rate on this profit. Whether or not they should pay tax on this profit is immaterial, the fact being that they are treated as being the same, even though one is religious based, and the other is not. Under the old law however, the church run homeless shelter pays no tax on this profit. The secular homeless shelter does pay tax on this profit. The only difference in these organisations is that one is religious based, whereas the other is not. Could any right-minded individual, holding the principle of the separation of church and state in the front of their mind, call this situation optimal? That is the reason for the law being changed to the current. |
